"We hope that this report will serve as a much needed alarm" Media on Terror A Column 9 report on terror reporting in Karnataka Please find attached herewith the booklet, Media on Terror A Column 9 report on terror reporting in Karnataka, published by 'Column 9', which is a collective comprising media practitioners and journalists reporting from Karnataka.
'Preface' of the book is given below: With Regards Abi "At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst" - Aristotle Preface This report was initially planned for publication in April 2008, immediately following the initial arrests of seven people in Honnali, Hubli and Bangalore, Karnataka on charges of suspected terrorism. It was planned as a response to the blitz of media reports that dangerously seemed to pronounce judgments on those arrested, much before the due process of law was played out. There has no doubt been an unjustified delay in the publication of this report. Having stated this, the sequence of events since April 2008 in Karnataka (and across India) has only increased the relevance of this report. On July 25, 2008, a series of bomb blasts took place in Bangalore. According to official sources, one person was killed in the blast in Bangalore. But subsequent to and preceding the Bangalore bomb blast, across India there have been several blasts in Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Delhi with live bombs being found in several other cities including Surat, Dharwad, etc. The questions that we have raised in this report re-surface with each incidence of bomb blast and the accompanying arrests by the Indian intelligence and state police forces. As journalists, we are concerned about the accompanying media blitz – the pile of questions that lie unanswered with every blast and arrest only seems to be increasing in size. The attempt at conversation that we hope to forge with other journalists through this report is perhaps more urgent now than ever before. We do hope this report will be received as a case in point from Karnataka; a report that is situated in concrete examples and conversations on the ground with a wide range of actors. We would of course welcome responses and comments, since the stated intention of this report is to begin conversations around the phenomena of reporting terrorism.
