Delhi sends draft land transit accord to Dhaka

Dhaka: In a major development, New Delhi has once again mounted pressure on Dhaka to sign an agreement that would allow reciprocal plying of cargo and passenger vehicles on the designated land routes of the two countries, and this time sent a draft agreement for consideration by the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday, the Indian proposal, however, is against the imposition of extra levy, local taxes on each other's vehicles using the land routes of both the countries.

The proposed transport agreement is viewed as a step forward to the implementation of a transit agreement between the two neighbouring countries. The transit issue is now awaiting decision of Bangladesh's new Awami League government following the recent visit of Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni to India, a top official in the Foreign Ministry said.

Bangladesh's mainstream opposition parties and civil societies have however vowed to resist granting of land transit facilities to India, saying that Delhi would move heavy arms and army troops to crush secessionist movements in north eastern Indian states. This, they fear, will provoke retaliation by Indian guerrillas against Bangladesh.
