I agree with you about the importance of local governance. There is an argument that local government will be a hindrance to central government's good works. Local government officials are prone to having the same negative qualities as MPs.

On balance though there can be no doubt that the sooner we start building effective local government the better off the nation will be. If nothing else, local government will at least push the concept of civic duty into localities.

Civic duty. Such an important concept and yet such an ignored concept.

You mention that local government is part of our proud tradition. I would be grateful if you could elaborate the point - I don't know much about it.
