INDIAN yoga guru set up stall on a tiny Scots island yesterday with "cures" for cancer and AIDS.
Swami Ramdev denied he was taking advantage of the sick as he opened an international base on Little Cumbrae.
When asked if he believed he could cure killer diseases, he replied in Hindi, then eventually said: "I never claim."
But just yards away, members of his organisation were selling booklets with recipes for concoctions including wheatgrass juice to cure cancer.
Yesterday, the swami's claims were blasted as "quackery of the highest order" by some critics.
Sanal Edamaruku, of the Indian Rationalist Association, called for Ramdev to be prosecuted for claiming to cure diseases such as cancer.
He said: "Claiming such absurdities is against the law."
And Mohammed Abbas, of the Indian Medical Association, blasted Ramdev's claims about yoga.
Abbas said it gave "false hope for ill people".
The brochure of medicines - titled A Repertoire of Proven Miraculous Ayurvedic Remedies - by Ramdev included treatments for everything from AIDS to multiple sclerosis.
Another section offered drugs for the "Treatment of mental retardation and mongoloid children".
Prices for the products were in Indian rupees. They were available by mail order.
Ramdev, who claims to have 80million followers around the world, has joined forces with two Scots care home millionaires to open the centre on the island off the Ayrshire coast.
He performed for journalists by walking on his hands and striking yoga poses.
Ramdev is a superstar in India, where more than 20million people tune into his daily TV show.
Sam and Sunita Poddar, owners of care home firm Lambhill Court, bought Little Cumbrae for £2million this year.
They plan to rename it Peace Island and establish it as an international yoga retreat, with detoxing treatments and laughter classes.
Sunita said: "Our aim is to promote healthy living through yoga."
Many people who paid £10 to get to yesterday's event were stuck on the mainland because boats hired to take them to the island didn't have enough fuel.
It is believed as many as 300 people, some of whom are thought to have travelled from India, couldn't get to the event.
