Media Is Responsible For Allowing Foreigners To Dabble In Internal Issues: Precaution Needed
Press has reported that the foreign ministerof Bangladesh on Sunday blamed media for allowing foreign diplomats posted in Dhaka to dabble into Bangladesh’s internal affair which often creates unwarranted irritants in bilateral ties. Dipu Moni also criticised media as in most occasions, she alleged, they do not give proper treatment to rejoinders, rather publish only ‘edited version’ of any rejoinder. The foreign minister came up with her critical views about the media while inaugurating a five-day orientation workshop for diplomatic correspondents at the Foreign Service academy in the capital. ‘Journalists often press the foreign diplomats for making comments on Bangladesh’s internal affairs… And they are sometime tempted by the press to make comments on our internal affair. This creates confusion in our bilateral ties,’ Dipu Moni said. The foreign minister suggested that media should not ask foreign diplomat for comments on the country’s internal affair.
We feel that Foreign Minister is largely correct. It is our observation also that most correspondents ask comment from foreign diplomats on internal issues. This should never happen. Young inexperienced reporters require thorough training in this regard. We have seen repeated rows have been created as a result of this. We hope this will cease.
