Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Our boundary our diplomats

Dear Ezaj - Surely you will concede the odds against sucess are stacked against the best of men (gender neutral sense) in Bangladesh. I dont think Dipu can do anything alone. Based on that very limited potential, I think she is doing as well as a job as she can possibly do.

We have to work with the cards fate has dealt to us & it has been unkind. We are an emotional & quarrelsome lot, prone to extreme pontificating and avoiding hard work or hard thinking. Furthermore, Bengalis in general these days are woefully ignorant of our history, economics & or geography or where we stand in the world today.

We only talk to people we agree with and havent been able to develop the depth of understanding that comes when operating with a clarity of vision. For example except for a person or two on this newsgroup nobody reads anything outside of their pre-concieved notions (much of it is wrong or misplaced).  In case you have forgotten just re-read some of the posts that get put up on this site.

Two steps forward and one backwards is in our fate. It is frustrating, I agree but we have to be patient & supportive (which does not by any means blind support). I think at this moment in time Bangladesh has a slim but reachable chance and we should make all efforts not to blow it.

Robin

PS - i think you are overly fixating on Pinak. he has no more or any less power than any ambassador of India. Furthermore, he is after all a Bengali like us. if he has offended some of us with his exuberance it is because he is prone to same emotional insecurities that affect us.

Bottom line we need good relations with India as we do with other countries in the region, To have a hostile India will not do us much good just as a hostile Bangladesh will not do any good to India. So it is in our mutual interest to resolve or diffreences and make a move forward. Heaven's sake partition has been over 60 years and Bangladesh has been free 38 years, niether can be undone. Surely we need to stop fighting old battles & disband the Hai hai brigade went it comes to regional politics!

Dear Robin,

Yes, she is better than any foreign minister we have had in the past. She has qualities and qualifications we could not have dreamt of in a foreign minister just a year ago. For sure any gender bias against her is unjustifiable. And by any measure she deserves a honeymoon period. We cannot expect her to perform as required from day one.

But its nine months into the job and the honeymoon period will come to an end soon enough. And, based on the evidence I have seen, even the most gallant independent will find it hard to defend her.

The country requires a strong foreign minister to deal with a host of pressing issues. The best thinkers within her own party - whoever they may be - already realise that 'perceptions' of our foreign policy are critical to any assesment of this government's success.

The country needs her to stand up and strongly engage public opinion - and lead public opinion. Being well educated abroad, being politically loyal, being comfortable with English and being an extremely charming person are notable characteristics in our current foreign minister. We can rightly congratulate ourselves based on what have seen in our past foreign ministers. But we should remember to compare these characteristics to the characteristics that define the foreign ministers of other South Asian countries.

Lets keep it simple. Pinak could eat Dipu for breakfast. And half of all our MPs too...

We remain gallant towards Dipu Moni and are grateful for the charm she has brought to the role. Few of us may match her intellect or her insight. But she needs to rise to the challenges of foreign policy both inside and outside the country in a manner that demonstrates leadership and strength on the issues that face us.

She should transform soon into the Dhadhi of our foreign policy - not remain its sweet Bhabi.
