[ALOCHONA] Those Vice Chancellors

Very unusually I happen to watch the full show in a WB's channel, where the two VC's of Jadappur and Kolkata universities were discussing on their recent rating by a national agency. I was struck by their decency, humbleness and intelligent articulation.

We do not watch any Indian or Pakistani channel normally and most or all of it are deleted from the list except two paki channels mainly for my wife to watch their cookery shows and this Indian channel came recently while tuning afresh.

Due to my avid interest in our educational issues started watching and admiring these two VC's discussions. Both of them wearing no tie or jacket, wearing no false mask while they are arguing- as if each one is complementing the other, though their Uni's rating varies greatly.

Every time a call comes both of them raise their joined palms with customary greeting 'namashkar'. Their criticism of government policies, infrastructure or environment, more of technical than cynical outburst. Their research – the rating is mainly based on number of research papers, its resources, technical and infrastructural strength, practical applications and whole deliberation was based on optimism and full of wisdom.

Contrary to the above, our VC's will appear in any talk show with full gear as if they have come to attend a dinner party (as I have seen them) and speak venom against the previous system and deliberate the same chorus in line with their political masters.

We do not know much about kind and quality of research the country's premier institution like Dhaka University does every year, what is its strength and its prospects. It is frustrating to see and understand the dilapidated status of our education system. As per the Wikipedia its rating is down word since 2006. Teachers are not to be blamed alone, it should be the whole environment that is being created and system that has been put in place over the years.
Though all VC's are politically placed yet the VC's blind backing for their political gurus fail to attract much for their own institutions. This is very strange, yet sad.

For research if done for love of the matter can attract conventional, institutional and also private endowment, industry owners can be attracted and brought in for applied research.

4/5 years ago, the World Bank was pressing hard for the ridiculous indemnity bill, I wrote a small letter to an English daily - why cann't we pursue WB to provide US$5 million for research to create an endowment for Dhaka university!

My little understanding on chemistry, physics, economics and political science, research can produce tangible and sustainable benefits to industries and society if rightly guided endeavor is made despite the resource constraint. And BD Diaspora with an effective initiative can help build facilities and operating frame work.
