[mukto-mona] Climate change a threat to human habitation across the globe: Recompense from industrialist countries demanded [1 Attachment]

Participants in a human chain and gathering organised at Kuakata sea beach in Patuakhali district on Tuesday viewed that climate change had posed a great threat to agriculture, environment, ecology, bio-diversity, and even human habitation across the globe and held the industrialised nations responsible for climate change and that they should take immediate measures to check its adverse impacts and give compensation to the affected countries.

They also called to prevent unplanned expansion of tourism industry in the coastal region of Bangladesh Development agencies Prantojon Trust (PT) and Participatory Research and Action Network (PRAN) jointly organized the programme. About one thousand local people, including Abdul Barek Molla, local UP Chairman, Mizanur Rahman Bullet, Press Club President, SM Shahjada, Executive Director, Ibrahim Hamid Masum, Manager of Prantajon Trust, K H Ali Azam, Managing Director of Ocean City, Amir Hossain, Johny Alamgir, Pintu Dey, Dipangkar Chakraborty and social workers participated in the human chain programme and addressed the gathering Bangladesh suffers huge economic losses because of frequent natural calamities triggered by the global climate change, the speakers told the gathering.

More than 15 million innocent poor people in the country's coastal belt, including Sundarbans, would be severely affected and inundated if no immediate measures are taken to check climate change impact, the speakers apprehended. They said that natural calamities such as floods, drought and cyclones have become regular phenomenon in Bangladesh affecting human rights, socio-economical balance, justice and national security issues because of climate change.

They called all sections of people across the country to get united to wage social movement against climate change. They focused on compensation for the climate change impact on Bangladesh from the rich countries, responsible for global warming, and emphasized on signing 'climate change treaty' on assurance abut giving compensation to the affected countries in the upcoming Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change. The participants also called for expanding eco-friendly tourism only in the coastal region maintaining bio-diversity and healthy climate environment.
