Crackdown on Shibir activists: 68 hauled up


The police swung into action by launching a massive crackdown on Shibir activists and leaders following home minister advocate Shahara Katun's directive to hunt down those responsible for the killing of BCL activist Faruk Hossain.(The Independent)

The home minister also warned the law enforcers of punitive action if they were found negligent in performing their duty.Faruk was killed in a fierce bloody clash between BCL and Shibir at Rajshahi university on the night of February 8.

Police and RAB started a manhunt in the early hours of today and arrested 68 students, mostly Shibir activists.Two separate cases were filed today against nearly 600 unidentified and identified Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) activists in connection with Monday night's clash.Mazedul Islam Opu, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League

(BCL), RU unit, filed a murder case with Motihar thana around 4:30 am against 35 identified and nearly 16 unnamed Shibir activists for killing Faruk Hossain.

At the same time, Sub-inspector of Motihar thana Khorshed Alam filed another case last night accusing over 500 unidentified and 29 identified Shibir activists under the Explosives Act . Shibir President and the General Secretary of RU unit Shamsul Alam Golap and Mobarak Hossain respectively have been made accused in the cases.

Meanwhile, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police conducted a massive raid from 1:30am to 6:00 am at RU and its adjacent areas, especially at the residential messes and picked up 68 people, most of them students and other people.

Sardar Nurul Amin, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) said, the arrested persons were being interrogated and if they were found innocent, they would be released. He further said, raids were being conducted at Shibir dominated messes and dormitories. Following the violent clash and police raids, RU campus had almost become empty with panicky students leaving the campus.

Faruk Hossain, a final year student of the department of Mathematics of RU and BCL activist brutally hacked to death by Shibir cadres in a overnight skirmishes between BCL and Shibir activists on Monday.

Student of the dormitories, however, blamed police inactivity for eruption of such violent clash between the two rival groups.

More than 10,000 students residing at various dormitories of the campus remained hostages to the terrorists as the armed Shibir cadres and rival BCL activists engaged in violent clashes. They used lethal weapons and firearms, exploded crude bombs in a bid to establish supremacy there.

The RU syndicate at an emergency meeting Tuesday night suspended all classes till tomorrow and all examinations till February 17.

A five-member committee headed by Prof Golam Kabir, Dean of Life and Earth Science Faculty, has been formed to probe the violence.

According to the Motihar thana sources, among the 34 accused in the case filed by BCL are RU Shibir President Shamsul Alam Golap, General secretary Mobarrok Hossain, Shibir activists Anis, Tafsir, Habibullah Masum, Shahin, Abdur Razzak, Khalid Hasan and Aminul Islam.

On the other hand, Ershadul Alam, Sub Inspector of Motihar Thana Police lodged another case against 29 shibir cadres including the president, secretary and other leaders and activists of RU Shibir under the Explosives Act.

Police from last night set up check posts at various places in the city and adjacent areas of RU and conducted massive raids at halls and messes. They are also checking buses and trains on various routes. The arrested include Raihan Kabir, Rasel, Sohel Rana, Sohail Hossain, Munzurul Alam, Jahid, Kibria, Zakaria, Al Mamun, Rafiqul, Yousuf Ali, Feroz Ahmed, Toha Bakkar, Shamsuzzoha, Abdur Razzak, Mahmudul Hasan, Abdul Awal, Mahfuzur Rahman, Aminul Islam, Khalequzzaman, Shahidul Islam, Musa, Kalimullah Mostafizur Rahman, Habibur Rahman, Moktadi Billah, Munsur Rahman and Atiqur Rahman.

State minister of home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku visited Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) today to see the conditions of the injured BCL leaders.

He also exchanged views with high officials of law enforcement agency and the leaders of Rajshahi city Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League (City & RU Unit).

He said those responsible for Monday night's clashes at Rajshahi University would be identified and necessary actions would be taken against them.

Inspector general of Police Nur Mohammad on Wednesday visited injured BCL leaders and activists at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and directed police officials to nab criminals within 24 hours. He also said, action would be taken against those policemen if any negligence is proved against them to take action against the terrorists of Shibir who resorted to massive violence at the campus of RU.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Unit of Awami League, Chhatra League and workers Party took out a huge procession this eveninon at the city streets in protest against the brutal murder of BCL leader Faruk Hossain.

The Chhatra League, Jubo League leaders and activists of Rajshahi City and Rajshahi University took out protest processions in various places of city and demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the killers of Faruk Hossain.
