50 injured in BCL factional clash at JU

July 5 (bdnews24.com) -- At least 50 people including an assistant proctor were injured in a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists at Jahangirnagar University that broke out on Monday morning.

The clash erupted at Al-Beruni Hall around 10:45am, eye-witnesses said, adding that the supporters of the ruling Awami League-backed university BCL president Rahedul Islam Shafin and general secretary Nirjhor Alam Shammo got into the fight over factional rivalry.

Reports from the campus said at least 11 shots were fired during the clash and around 10 out of the 50 injured sustained critical injuries. A number of them were pushed off the third floor of Al-Beruni Hall. The clash has spread to other halls as well, according to reports.

Supporters of the BCL president have taken position in front of his stronghold, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, the eye-witnesses said. The general secretary's stronghold AFM Kamaluddin Hall was also fortified by his supporters. Additional police were deployed on the campus to bring the situation under control.
