[ALOCHONA] No improvement in traffic system after ban on meetings

No improvement in traffic system after ban on meetings

Even after banning of public meetings, processions and rallies on the city streets by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) with a view to reducing traffic congestions, no tangible sign of improvement in traffic system was witnessed yesterday, alleged the city dwellers.

People's sufferings had not reduced as thousands of buses were seen in gridlock in most of the important city points like Jatrabari, Syedabad, Gulistan, Paltan, Shahbagh, Bangla Motor, Farm Gate, Mouchak, Malibagh, Banani and Gulshan.

The commuters alleged that the government steps to reduce traffic jam by closing schools and colleges, and driving out the 20 to 25 years of old vehicles from the roads actually could not bring any improvement in this regard.

"When we are outside our residence, we become subject to intolerable traffic congestion. While at home we undergo frequent power outage," said Adnan Faruque Mubin, a businessman of Moghbazar area.

Masum Billah, a resident of Badda, said he leaves his house at 10 am for Bangla Moter by bus and it took two and a half hours to reach there. This is the routine life of Dhaka city, he added.

Besides, the Communications Ministry has recently identified about 15,000 dilapidated and 80,000 unfit vehicles which are plying on the streets of the capital without valid documents, also causing traffic jam in the city.

With a view to improving the traffic system, the traffic control section of the DMP have also urged all to follow the traffic signal light, lane side, and to avoid over taking and over loading.

The traffic congestions of Dhaka city cost some Tk 20,000 crore loss every year and lost 8.16 million work hours every day, said a study report carried out by two research groups-- Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Bangladesh-- in collaboration with Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).
