[ALOCHONA] Terrible traffic jam in metropolis

Terrible traffic jam in metropolis : Old vehicles back to city streets

As the drive against the 20 to 25 years old vehicles is running in a leisurely motion, the old, dilapidated and without fitness buses are again plying on the city streets causing terrible traffic congestions in the month of Ramzan.(The New Nation)

While visiting different parts in the city, it was found that the number of old buses above 20 to 25 years are frequently plying on the roads more than even before start of the drive started in the mid July.

The vehicles which were not seen before the start of the drive were now moving openly and the concerned authorities do not take any action against them, alleged the city dwellers.

Meanwhile, many owners have changed bodies of their old buses and also tinted those but the engines are the same. These unfit busses are creating traffic jam and making the air polluted by blowing up black smokes, causing serious health hazards to the commuters.

Source said that the government had started the drive against the old vehicles to reduce traffic jam in the capital. The government has already closed all the educational institutions in the capital to ease traffic congestion in the month of Ramzan.

Besides, the traffic control section of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has urged all to follow the traffic signal light, lane side, avoid over taking and over loading with a view to reducing traffic jam in Ramzan. But their entire efforts almost turned into futile, alleged the commuters.

On Thursday, DMP commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque further urged all to drive the vehicles following their respective lanes. But some bus drivers told this reporter that if they follow the lane system, the traffic jam in the city would further aggravate. The commissioner told reporters that it was not possible to reduce the traffic jam from the city without curtailing the number of busses.

Solaiman Hossain Apu, a student of Independent University at Dhanmondi told this reporter that he left his residence at 9 am yesterday to attend the class at 11 am but reached the campus at 1pm and missed the class.

While visiting the Mohakhali, Gabtoli, Kamalapur and Saidabad bus terminals it was found that many buses were kept near those terminals after the start of the drive. But now these buses are running on the city streets.

Source said the old trucks above 20 to 25 years were banned to enter in to the city before 11 pm but police permit to enter after 8 pm that is also increasing traffic jam.
