AL men besiege Ctg mayor's office

Some pro-Awami League activists besieged the office of Chittagong city mayor Monjurul Alam on Tuesday in protest against the drive launched by the city corporation to remove illegal hoardings, police sources and witnesses said.

The activists of Juba League led by its city unit joint secretary Mohiuddin Bachchu laid siege to the office of the mayor for about two hours till 5:00pm asking for halting the drive, they said. Some of the activists allegedly stormed into the mayor's office room and manhandled his staff.
When contacted, mayor Monjur Alam told New Age that the Juba League activists entered into his office to register their protest against the drive for removing illegal hoardings from the city.
'Some of the activists misbehaved with my office staff when they protested. I calmed down the activists and they left my office after I assured them that a meeting would be called sometime next week to settle the issue,' he said.

'Hearing the news, many people, including activists of Chhatra Dal, came to the city corporation office but no untoward incident took place…I tackled the situation to avoid any confrontation there,' he said.
Assistant commissioner of the CMP's Kotwali zone Mohammad Shahnawaz said that some activists of Juba League were seen kicking at the collapsible gate of the mayor's office room.
'The activists misbehaved with people after entering the city corporation office. But somehow we managed to have them leave the place,' he said.
'We also forced the JCD activists to leave the scene to avert a confrontation,' he added.
Juba League leader Mohiuddin Bachchu told newsmen on the spot that the CCC had started the drive to pull down hoardings without notice.
Police and CCC sources said that some leaders of Juba League were involved in setting up illegal hoardings in different areas of the city.Juba League denied the charges.
