[ALOCHONA] Indian ship spilling oil at sea

Indian ship served notice for spilling oil at sea at Patenga

The Department of Environment served on Thursday a show cause notice
to the local agent of an Indian ship for spilling oil at the Petnga
coast, Doe officials said.
Sigma Shipping Ltd has been asked to show cause by December 28 why
legal action would not be taken against the Indian ship MV Ocean Pearl
for spilling oil at Patenga, said DOE director Jafor Alam.
Chittagong Custom House commissioner Jamal Hossain said that the
Indian ship beached at Patenga without taking permission from the
customs authorities.
'We got proof that the ship spilled oil,' said the DoE director.
'We collected the sample of water from around the ship that got
aground near the Patnga coast,' he said.
He said, 'The test reports confirmed that the ship spilled oil.'
'After receiving the reply, we will go for the next course of
action,' he said.
'Meanwhile, we requested the Chittagong Port Authority to do its
part of the job against the vessel for causing environmental hazards
at our coast,' he said.
There is little initiative to refloat the Indian ship MV Ocean
Pearl causing severe environmental pollution, since it got aground at
the Patenga coast on November 13, shipping sources said.
It is laden with more than 16,000 tonnes of fertiliser imported by
the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation from China, said
Chittagong Port Authority deputy conservator Nazmul Alam.
The ship was forced to go for emergency beaching at Patenga coast
as it was about to sink after developing cracks at the bottom after
hitting an underwater wreckage near the port channel, he said.
Leakage of oil from the ship was detected during a survey on
Tuesday, DoE director Jafar Alam told New Age.
He said, 'DoE officials found a number of barrels filled with oil
spilling from the ship.'
He said that they also traced oil slicks in the coastal water.
He said, 'We have decided to go for legal action against this ship
for causing environmental pollution that poses a threat to the marine
life in the bay.'
