Businessmen controlling politicians: Jalil

Awami League lawmaker Abdul Jalil on Sunday said country's political leadership is now at the hands of the businessmen."The parliament has been devoid of politics," the former AL general secretary told reporters at a 'Meet the Press' held in the capital's Dhaka Reporters' Unity office.
Jalil blamed the government for failing to control law and order situation and price hike of essentials."Though the government achieved success in agriculture and education, it failed to supply necessary gas and electricity to the people."
There is no coordination in the Awami League-led 14-party alliance due to want of proper initiatives, Jalil observed, adding that the ruling AL also is not doing any activity which people expect from the political parties.
On the opposition, the AL lawmaker said: "The BNP is not committed to the public and democracy yet. This is the reason they do not join parliament."Jalil also reminded the government that it should ensure rights to the opposition to talk in the House. To ensure the smooth democracy in the future, he demanded investigation and trial of tortures on political leaders and into the allegations brought against them after the 1/11 political changeover.
Jalil resigned on July 21 of 2009 alleging that he was not being allowed to function as the party's general secretary.
