[ALOCHONA] Re: On RAB, a newspaper editor etc...

Tarique's remarks shut door for Limon to seek justice

Workers Party, a partner of the ruling Awami League led alliance, said on Saturday that the remarks of the prime minister's defence adviser would influence the ongoing investigation of the home ministry into RAB shooting and maiming Limon Hossain and shut the door for the victim to seek justice.

In a resolution, the party politbureau described the defence adviser's remarks on a national daily editor for publishing investigative reports on Limon episode as an obstacle to publication of the truth and 'extremely unfortunate.'

Tarique Ahmed Siddique's remarks would not only influence the home ministry's investigation into RAB's action that left Limon without a leg but also obstruct press freedom, it said.

Tarique told a news conference at the prime minister's office on Thursday that he was '100 per cent sure' Limon Hossain was not deliberately shot at by RAB for which the teenager student lost his left leg.

At the news conference, in which the reporters of a select group of newspapers were invited, leaving out the daily which had exposed the incident, Tarique blamed it for writing too frequently on Limon.

A resolution, the Workers' Party politbureau took at a two-day meeting, said the remarks of defense advisor Tarique had shut the door for Limon to seek justice.

It said that the Limon incident shocked the nation as it took place at a time when everyone became vocal against extra judicial killings by RAB and other law enforcement agencies.

The WP demanded immediate stopping all extra judicial killings in the country.

It said the defence advisor's remarks completely contradicted the commitment and pledge Awami League had made in its election manifesto to stop extra judicial killings.

Workers' Party said the defence adviser's remarks had tarnished the image of the Awami League led government.

It demanded restoration of the Constitution as it was on adoption in 1972, by dropping the amendments brought subsequently to change its original character.

The WP politburo expressed concern over the government's failure to check soaring essential prices and requested for convening a meeting of the parties in the AL led coalition to find out a solution to spiraling prices.

Chaired by the party chief Rashed Khan Menon, MP, the meeting held at its central office, was addressed by, among others, general secretary Anisur Rahman Mollick, politburo members Bimal Biswas, Fazle Hossain Badsha, Nurul Hasan, Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, Ikbal Kabir Zahid, Nur Ahmed Bakul, Hazera Sultana, Manoj Saha and Quamrul Ahsan.
