DR YUNUS has conducted himself with a dignity and decorum that is rare indeed. With great fortitude he defined his disagreement with the government, sought justice from the courts, accepted the court's verdict and withdrew from his leadership of the Grameen Bank. How sad it is to see such a man, irrespective of his greatest accomplishments, maligned by an elected government. Like many of us, he might have hoped for better, but again, like many of us, he probably didn't expect better. This was not the first time that a good man has been driven to withdraw by the insidious machinations of our political classes. The foreign governments that stood up for him did the right thing. They need no lessons from us on how to identify, nurture and defend greatness. How can we compare the behaviour, language and attitude of Dr Yunus with that of the government? Everyone knows that if Dr Yunus had not exercised his democratic right to enter politics a few years ago, the ruling party would have left him alone. At least the world can now see us as we really are. I thank Dr Yunus for setting a shining example of good conduct. I thank him for setting the gold standard of civic duty. The civil society was about to finally rise with Dr Yunus. Alas, without him, the civil society is on its knees again and for our suffering nation, it is, once again, business as usual. Above all, I thank Dr Yunus for daring to exercise his democratic right to enter politics and giving civil society a sense of `yes we can!'
