[ALOCHONA] Constitution "fonstitution"

Dear Alochoks

So, the cabinet is reviewing a bill for changes to the constitution. Not withstanding the utter irrelevance of this action, let's consider some of the changes (well, those that I want to focus on!):

• Removal of the caretaker system. Well, there is no precedent for free and fair elections ever having been held by a sitting government so what exactly are we getting into? I didn't see any extra provisions to ensure this would happen..? However, perfect for a sitting nethri!

• Mandatory display of Sheikh Mujib's portrait. Really? Is this because no one would do so voluntarily? Is it because more people revile him than worship him? There is no more glaring evidence of this fact than this provision! Perhaps the BNP/Jamaat alliance can make portraits of Zia and Moududi compulsory? Soon, buildings will have to be made larger just to accommodate all the portraits!!

• Our nationality is now Bangalee rather than Bangladeshi although citizenship will be described with the latter..?? Is this so we can tie ourselves more closely to West Bengal? Is this "epar Bangla, opar Bangla" enshrined in the constitution? Seems totally schizophrenic to me!!

• Socialism and nationalism are to become fundamental principles of the state? Aka "national socialism" (heard that before?) or reminiscent of BAKSAL? Of course religious parties would be finished - that's ok - although that removes honesty and morality as a public issue - perfect for the nethris!!

• A socialist economic system. Does this mean that free market economics is dead? Collective farms, massive expansion of the state (and corruption of course!!) all on the cards? Wonderful!

• Usurpers of power are to be treated as traitors. That's fine by me. What treatment for abusers of power or thieves of the people's money (yes, it is people's money, not the governments!). Oh, no change? I suppose that's ok for the nethris then.

All in all, these changes have no bearing on anything that people actually care about nor issues that actually affect them every day and have affected their lives every day since Independence.

This is just cynical twaddle. Like I've said before, the constitution isn't worth the toilet paper the nethris wipe their bottoms with......although I'm sure the nethrists would die for the latter!!
