[ALOCHONA] India claims 350 acres on Padua border

India claims 350 acres on Padua border

Indo-Basngladesh joint border survey team today failed to fix the
border line at Padua in Goainghat upazila as the Indian side illegally
insisted its claim on 350 acres including the Jaflong quarry, a
territory of Bangladesh recognized by the boundary pillars No 1269-71
set up decades ago.

"Intransigence attitude of the Indian team has failed us to survey the
border line at Padua for the last three days. They are insisting on
the claim upon more than 350 acres, stretching up to the bank of
Piyain River," said a member of the Bangladesh team.

"Their greedy eyes are on our quarry and rich land of Padua," he added.

Bangladesh officials on the joint survey team led by Ferdous Hossasin
reached Padua near the main border pillar No. 1270 at 10 am today.
Soon the Indian team led by Sang Prie joined them and started
discussion taking up the map.

The Indian team insisted on their claim of border extending up to
Piyain River. Bangladesh side refuted the claim. After lengthy
exercise the joint survey team returned to their respective camps with
decision to resume the task tomorrow (Thursday).

As the joint survey team remained engaged at Padua, scores of police,
paramilitary BGB and plain clothed squad of intelligence agencies were
on guard against agitation by villagers who had been protesting the
joint survey. Critical of the government the demonstrators said fresh
survey is intended to give away their lands to India.
