Buildings tilt as tremor jolts Bangladesh

Dhaka, Sep 18 (bdnews24.com) — A moderate earthquake has shaken Dhaka,
Chittagong, Sylhet, Faridpur and some other parts of the country,
panicking people out of their homes Sunday evening.

bdnews24.com received phone calls that several buildings have tilted
in capital Dhaka but there have been no reports of casualties so far.

The tremor, measured at 6.8 on the Richter scale, jolted the country
for about 10 to 15 seconds around 6:42pm BdST.

Its epicentre was in 495 kilometre away from Dhaka, 68 kilometres
north-west of Gangtok, Sikkim, India, 119 km north north-west of
Shiliguri, West Bengal, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive tsunami was not
generated based on earthquake and historical tsunami data. "This
earthquake is located too far inland to generate a tsunami in the
Indian Ocean."

Screaming people scurried down the stairs out in the open.

Sudipta Das, an IT professional in Sylhet, said he felt it. "The water
bucket was rocking in bathroom... I felt a little bit scared."
