Ban says war crimes trial essential for Bangladesh's future:

DHAKA, Nov 15 (BSS) - Visiting UN Secretary General Ban-Ki- moon today strongly supported Bangladesh initiatives to try the suspects of "crimes against humanity" during 1971 Liberation War saying it was "essential" for the national unity and future. "For any nation, dealing with the darker aspects of the past is essential to creating unity and building a healthy, brighter future," he said while delivering a lecture at a special convocation at Dhaka University as it conferred upon him an honorary doctor of law degree.He said Bangladesh was seeking to deal more fully with the legacy of 1971 establishing a war crimes tribunal and took "other important steps" in this regard."These issues are difficult, to be sure . . .
