Re: [mukto-mona] Bhutto's recognition of Bangladesh !!!!

I do not think Bhutto could be called a shrewd politician. After all he was the principal villain for the break-up of his country. Because of the sheer stupidity of his people, he could maintain a good deal of popularity in the post-1971 Pakistan. However, he did not have the shrewdness of even being able to save himself from the death sentence by a court of his country.

A red carpet welcome to Bhutto by Mujib in Dhaka shortly after the independence of Bangladesh was a real shame for the country. I do not think it was for any kind of reality check by Mujib, nor was it due to any kind of shrewd bargain by Bhutto. Welcoming Bhutto, not really caring about punishing the war criminals, firing of Tajuddin, they all fell into a pattern, which did not help Bangladesh; it caused dishonor and misery for the country for the next 35 years.

1. Bhutto, a shrewed politician, was solely responsible for not letting Yahiya to invite Mujib to form the government. Break-up of Pakistan was better for Bhutto as that would guarantee his premiership. Subsequently, when Yahiya Khan, a Pathan, was asked what reward he had received from Bhutto by letting things go as per Bhutto's desire, he pointed to the wheel chair he was sitting on and said, "That's what I have got from him." Ziaul Huque, a Panjabi, who was promoted by Bhutto to position 1 from position 4 in army never forgot Bhutto's "crime". He kept his promise of "hanging that bustard until death." His extremity was too much to be tolerated and hence had to be debited alongwith the then American Ambassador to Pakistan in a plane crash---that's what was a sensational news item in then press and media.

2. On his first arrival to independent Bangladesh, Bhutto was given an unbelievable reception. What a farce! Looks like disapproval came even from within AL. Probably Mujib had to do some reality check. Reconstruction of the devastated land, rehabilitationb of the displaced, and feeding the hungry probably could not be guaranteed with help from India, USSR, and Britain alone. As far as I remember, China had not recognized the new country yet, let alone Saudi Arabia and other Islamic countries. Bhutto with his shrewedness could bargain well to secure a hero's welcome however humiliating it could be to those in whose memory the barbaric atrocities by Pakistani army was still fresh and in whose hearts hatred for Pakistani rulers and Bhutto was still at the peak. We may still remember that to recognize Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and some other middle eastern countries had to wait till the assassination of Mujib.

How are these words from a lunatic memorable to the people of Bangladesh or to the expatriate Bangladeshis? Are we supposed to rejoice the recognition of Bangladesh by the criminal and failed state of Pakistan, when the fact is that they never had to face justice for the heinous crimes that their military had committed in our land in 1971?
