Re: [mukto-mona] How to follow religions correctly

I think peace through religion is impossible; yesterday, today, tomorrow, you name the time. Because, except for Buddhism, all major religions have, and always had, too many fixations that hinder human common sense, freedom, progress, development, and adaptability. The only way to keep the God-fearing religions worth any good is to not follow much of what are in them.

Take, for example, this woman who wanted to give 14 lovely little girls an experience of the hellfire. If we really believe in the requirement of regular prayers to avoid hellfire, how can we blame this woman for doing what she has done? There is no reason to believe that she had an animosity toward each of those 14 girls, and wanted to punish/abuse them. She probably loved those girls, and wanted what she genuinely believed would be good for them afterlife.

To me, the idea of fearing God is too demeaning to the human mind, and rewards and punishments from God are insulting reasons for humans to be good. Humans need to be good through their sense of putting themselves in the positions of the victims of bad actions. This is universal, religion or not.

Peace through religion, as it exists today, is an impossible feat to attain. Today's religion is not about seeking God through knowledge and spirituality - it's mostly about its baggage - such as, life-style, rituals, etc. Consequently, religious people mostly concentrate on life-styles and rituals than anything else. Religion has been reduced to wearing certain garbs and conducting prayers certain ways a few times a day.

When you import life-style from another region into a different region, it is bound to clash with the local customs. You have to resort to force or brain-washing to implement that life-style. That's what is going on in the name of religion in most parts of the world. That's why you force young boys and girls to pray certain ways, when they want to play. That's why you force them to cover with certain garbs, when they want to put on nice dresses. What you are doing is – trying to impose a different life-style – that's all.

I believe God can only be found through knowledge, spirituality, and your deeds, not through your dresses or prayer. Many Hindus believe that just reciting verses or listening to the recitation from the Bhagabat Gita one can seek God. This is what religion has been reduced to.
