Enraged by the early December gangrape of a 15-year-old schoolgirl in Madhupur, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban yesterday to demand an end to violence against women.
The protesters sought justice for the schoolgirl and another 14-year-old Marma girl who was raped and then murdered in Rangamati around the same time in December.
The state should ensure women's protection and to do so, they said, it had to address the issues involved in a systematic and collective manner. Besides, a significant change is necessary in the patriarchal mindsets at family and community levels.
Representatives from 20 rights organisations, cultural activists, studentsand many others participated in the human chain and rally organised by Sangat Bangladesh and One Billion Rising.
"We have to respond by ensuring justice [to the survivors of violence] and by sending out a very clear message that there is zero tolerance for rape," said prominent human rights activist Irene Khan.
Rapes had the lowest conviction rates in the world, she said, which was why such acts were committed again and again.
Women's rights activist Maleka Begum criticised the societal trend of blaming the victim rather than the rapists.
When they are traumatised by what has happened to them, their families shun them, police refuse to file cases and courts fail to ensure justice. This is how the rape victims are harassed repeatedly. Structural failures and patriarchal attitudes should be blamed for all this, speakers said.
A multi-dimensional approach must be undertaken to address violence against women, said Shaheen Anam, executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, emphasising the need for incorporating gender issues in the education system.
"Women's rights activists are coming to the realisation that in order to make the movement stronger we have to include everyone."
Theatre personality Sara Zaker echoed Shaheen's view, saying the movement needed to "go viral".
Spontaneous reactions such as demonstrations would be there but long-term strategies were also needed to combat the issue, said women's rights activist Shipra Bose.
Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain o Salish Kendra; Shireen Haq, founder member of Naripokkho; Khushi Kabir, coordinator of Nijera Kori; Aly Zaker, theatre personality; Farah Khan, country director of ActionAid, and cultural organiser Nasiruddin Yousuf Bacchu also joined the demonstration.
Meanwhile, human chains were formed in Tangail, Madhupur and Gala union, condemning the 15-year-old's gangrape and demanding exemplary punishment to the culprits. The protesters also asked the authority to give protection to the victim and her family.
The gangrape of the girl took place between December 6 and 10 in Madhupur. The four violators and their abettor were arrested on December 31 and were taken on police remand on Wednesday.
Ironically, the abettor is a young woman, Bithi Akter, who befriended the victim a month before handing her over to the culprits. The four are SM Nuruzzaman alias Gada, 42, Shajahan Ali, 40, Moniruzzaman Moni, 39, and Harunur Rashid Harun, 27.
On December 10, the rapists left the girl by the rail line in Tangail from where she was recovered by her brother.
Political and social organisations in the capital yesterday demanded expeditious trial of the violators.
Mujahidul Islam Selim, president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, and its General Secretary Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed in a joint statement expressed concern over the rape.
The chairman and the general secretary of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation said the incident in Tangail proved that the government had failed to provide security to the people.
The Jatiya Konyashishu and Advocacy Forum held a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club, demanding exemplary punishment to the violators.
Also yesterday, Dhaka Medical College Hospital authorities formed a medical board for treating the teenage schoolgirl who was gang-raped in Madhupur of Tangail early December last year.
Doctors said the victim had been showing signs of mental imbalance but her condition was improving.
The seven-member team includes medicine, gynaecology and psychology experts, said Bilkis Begum, coordinator of One-Stop Crisis Centre at the DMCH.
Bilkis, a gynaecology consultant who is also on the board, said the girl was still on saline as she was not taking any food or drink. The class-IX girl also responded to doctors' queries for the first time yesterday since her admission on Monday night.
Her problems are more of mental rather than physical in nature. The victim had been screaming at the sight of any unknown men. But yesterday she did not react that way when doctors and some other unknown men went to visit her.
Reports of several tests conducted on her were normal, said Bilkis.
Meanwhile, family members of the accused protested the latters' innocence and claimed the entire incident was a "conspiracy," reports our Tangail correspondent. They demanded proper investigation into the matter.
Mozibor Rahman, officer-in-charge of Madhupur Police Station, said the accused had already confessed the crime during interrogation.
According to police investigation, Bithi took the girl to Madhupur for a role in a drama. After the shooting at Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation in Madhupur on December 6, they took the girl at the house of Nuruzzaman at Bokarbaid village.
"The four men raped the girl when Bithi was present in the house that night," the OC added.

পাকিস্থানের মালালা বেগমের উপর যখন হামলা হল তখন বাংলাদেশি মিডিয়ার সে কি কান্না, প্রত্যেকটা পত্রিকা, টিভি তে হেডলাইন, আবার এখন চলছে ভারতের এক জনের জন্য কান্না, প্রথম আলো সহ বিভিন্ন পত্রিকায় বিশাল বিশাল লেখা। কিন্তু সাজিয়া নামের আমাদের এক ডাক্তার যখন খুন হল তখন কোথাও কোন খবর ছিলনা, ঘটনার ২ দিন পর দায়সারা গোছের খবর ছেপেছে পত্রিকাগুলো, তাও শেষের দিকের পৃষ্ঠায়, চিপার মধ্যে। ২১ শে ডিসেম্বর তুমা চিং মারমা নামের অষ্টম শ্রেণির এক
ছাত্রীকে রাঙ্গামাটি তে ধর্ষণের পর হত্যা করা হয়েছে, সে খবরও কারো জানা নেই।
অনেককেই দেখলাম ভারতের মেয়েটার কাছে ক্ষমা চেয়ে স্ট্যাটাস দিচ্ছে।
বাঙ্গালীর অভ্যাসটা এমন অন্য দেশের লোকেরা মুতলেও সেটা শরবত হিসেবে খাওয়ার জন্য হুড়োহুড়ি পড়ে যাবে।
মানবিক হওয়া উচিৎ তবে সেটা দেশের ভিতর থেকে শুরু করলেই ভালো। গতকাল গ্রামীণফোনের কনসার্টে অনেকেই গেছেন, বাঙ্গালী এখন ১০/২০ হাজার টাকায় টিকিট কিনে গান শুনতে যায়, বাঙ্গালী ওয়েস্টিনে পিঠা উৎসবে যায় ভাপা পিঠা খেতে, কিন্তু তাদের কজন এই শীতে একটা রাস্তার বাচ্চাকে ৫০ টাকা দিয়ে একটা গরম কাপড় কিনে দিয়েছে ? কিংবা এক বেলা খাবার ? বাঙ্গালীর মত "বাইনচোদ" মার্কা জাতি মনে হয় দুনিয়ার আর কোথাও নেই।
শাহজাহান খান গতকাল জুতার বাড়ি খেয়েছেন, অবশেষে কেউ একজন দেশের মান রাখল, আমরা এখন গর্ব করে বলতে পারব, জর্জ বুশ জুতা খেয়েছিল, আমাদের দেশেও খায়। ইকনমিস্ট প্রতিবেদন দিয়েছিল, অর্থনীতিতে ২০৫০ এ আমরা আমেরিকাকে চুদে দিব। শাহজাহান মিয়া আগেই চুদে দিল।

ক্যামেরারা সামনে এবং ক্যামেরার পিছনে কাপড় খোলার জন্য কিছু মেয়ের আগ্রহ তৈরি হল। বাপের বয়সী কিছু কিছু লোক এরই মধ্যে নিশ্চয় তাদের দাম-দর ঠিক করে ফেলেছে, বিভিন্ন প্রোডাকশন হাউস ক্যামেরার পিছনের কাজের জন...্য তাদেরকে নিলামে তুলছে, ইতিমধ্যেই মনে হয় ঠিক হয়ে গিয়েছে যে থাইল্যান্ড, সিঙ্গাপুর, ব্যাংকক, দুবাই এ কে কোন বিছানায় কার সাথে শুয়ে পরবে।
টিভি চ্যানেল গুলো নারী অধিকারের নামে ঘরের মেয়েদেরকে বিভিন্ন প্রসাধন কোম্পানির টাকায় বেশ্যা বানাচ্ছে, কিন্তু যে মেয়েটি ইতিমধদ্ধেই অভাবের তাড়নায় পতিতা হয়েছে, তাকে সেই পথ থেকে ফিরিয়ে সমাজে প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য কি করেছে ? কিচ্ছু করেনি, কারণ তাতে তো আর ব্যাবসা হবেনা, এখানে টাকাই মুখ্য, ব্যাবসাই আসল।
তারপরেও টিভি চ্যানেল গুলোকে ধন্যবাদ যে তাদের জন্যই মানুষ কিছু মানসম্পন্ন বেশ্যা পাচ্ছে, না হলে ফার্মগেট,মালিবাগ অথবা মগবাজারের কালো চামড়ার দুর্গন্ধওয়ালা হাড্ডিসার দেহ গুলোর উপর শুয়ে পড়তে হত। নারীবাদের নামে মিডিয়া শুধু সেই সব মেয়েদের কথাই বলে যাদের যাদের বুকের মাপ ৩৬, কোমরের মাপ ২৬, যাদের নিতম্বের মাপ ৩৬ । যাদের গোলাপি গায়ের রঙ, যাদের কাপড় খুললে দেহ থেকে মাতাল করা দামি পারফিউম এর গন্ধ আসে। মেধা নয়, কাপড় খোলাটাই সাফল্যের চাবি কাঠি ।
জয় হোক মিডিয়ার, জয় হোক বেশ্যার দালালদের, জয় হোক সুন্দরী বেশ্যাদের, নিশ্চয়ই বেশ্যারা একদিন পৃথিবীর বুকে বাংলাদেশের নাম উজ্জ্বল করবে।

পুলিশ সদর দফতরের দেওয়া তথ্যানুযায়ী, ২০১২ সালে ৩ সহস্রাধিক নারী ও শিশু ধর্ষণের শিকার হয়েছে। বছরের প্রথম ৬ মাসে সারাদেশে ধর্ষণের শিকার হয়েছে এক হাজার ৮৬৯ জন। এদের মধ্যে ১৩ জনকে ধর্ষণের পর খুন করা হয়েছে। পরিচয় নিশ্চিহ্ন করতে পুড়িয়ে মারার মতো পৈশাচিক ঘটনাও রয়েছে। ২০১২ সালে সবচেয়ে বেশি ধর্ষণের ঘটনা ঘটেছে রাজধানীতে। মানবাধিকার সংগঠন অধিকার-এর তথ্যানুযায়ী, ২০১২ সালে ৯ শতাধিক ধর্ষণের ঘটনা ঘটে। ২০১১ সালে এ সংখ্যা ছিল ৭১১। ধর্ষণ ছাড়াও নারী নির্যাতনের ভয়াবহ তথ্য পাওয়া যায় পুলিশ সদর দফতরের পরিসংখ্যানে। তাদের তথ্যানুযায়ী, ২০১২ সালের জানুয়ারি থেকে জুন পর্যন্ত ১০ হাজার ২৯ জন নারী নির্যাতনের শিকার হয়েছেন। ২০১১ সালে এর সংখ্যা ছিল ৩ হাজার ৩৪৪। ...........
