Re: [mukto-mona] The Enigma of Rape (by Trisha Ahmed and Avijit Roy)

Member Roy deserves our thanks for taking time and discussing this social disease of our time.

We cannot generalize rape in one way or other. Different people commits this crime for different reasons. HOWEVER my personal feeling is we as a community did not make it our priority to eradicate this from our communities.

Most of our leaders are busy protecting rapists than ensuring this does not happen in our country. We foam our mouths about What happened in Delhi or what Pakistani solders did to our women during 1971 but not as much interested to look at ourselves TODAY!!

There are people who want to blame the victims here. I don't think this should be even discussed from this angle as a primary issue on rape.

I think, the main issue is we failed to punish rapists when such crimes have been committed.
I promise you if some of the criminals get capital punishment and criminals who killed Biswajit gets punished (Pretty easy case, the pictures are all over the world), people will think twice before even attempting such crimes in future.

Which goes back to my obsession with empowering our courts, police and media (We have some success in this). Because of media we know about Biswajit and other rape victims.

Remember the "Centurion rapist" at Jahangirnagar University? Because of this criminal's political alliance, half of our population would not open their mouth about it. How sad?

We witness the same scenario with Biswajit. When do you think member Muhammad Ali will write about it (Unless the criminal belonged to BNP)? I don't hope for any word from our elders unless it is the "Other guy" (As oppose to my guy).

Bottom line is we as a people have to enjoin what is good/right/moral and oppose what is "Evil" no matter who commits crime. If our educated population are such spineless idiots, how our sisters will be protected. The least we can do is to speak up boldly against it and reject such criminals in our circles. That would a start...

Shalom!

Subject: [mukto-mona] The Enigma of Rape (by Trisha Ahmed and Avijit Roy)

Just as the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut forced American politicians to rethink gun control laws, the late December rape incident in India has also spurred discussions regarding women's status in the country and the subject of rape in general. The topic of rape has historically been approached from a multitude of angles; it has been justified as an act of uncontrolled emotion of sexual attraction by some, and as a display of supremacy by others. Rape is often regarded as a despicable act that is conducted to display male domination over females, but is power really the only factor in explaining why men rape?...
