[mukto-mona] Growth of Islam and Other Religions?

Dr. Das has raised a noteworthy point here. There are indeed a lot of 'Muslim-named' people who do not actually follow much of Islam. Of course, there are more percentages of people among the non-Muslims who do not follow their forefathers' religions. Muslims are quite a bit behind in this respect; and my judgment on that is that people born in Muslim families get a lot more religious brain-washing from the very beginning of their life.

In the overall equation, atheists are the fastest growing population group in the world. The reason is simple. As people know more and use their natural brain, it is normal for them to give up the nonsense and futility of religions.

"The so-called fast growth of Islam is mostly due to excessive breeding." -- That Islam is the fastest growing religion is a fiction.  In its growth history of about fifteen centuries, it represents less than twenty per cent of the world population, while Christianity represents about sixty per cent in its growth of about twenty one centuries.  Most of the Muslims live in Indonesia and the Indian subcontinent, clearly pointing to their Hindu origin.  The number of apostates bearing Muslim names are not insignificant compared to those who believe in Islam.

Growth due to breeding does not mean much.  Grass breeds faster than trees.  Dog breeds faster than Lion, and poorer people breed faster than the rich in any community.

Here are some numbers for Dr. Roy. These are based upon my Google search for "Demographics of India/Pakistan/Bangladesh" and "Population of India/Pakistan/Bangladesh in 1950."

Within a span of 60 years (1951-2011 or 1950-2010), the population of India has grown by about 235%, and that of Pakistan+Bangladesh has grown by about 325%. Within a span of 25 years (1975-2000), the population of India has grown by about 63%, and that of Pakistan+Bangladesh has grown by about 79%. If you do your own search, you might find slightly different numbers. But the trend would be approximately the same.

What do these numbers tell? Assuming no significant migration between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the Muslim-majority east and west sections of the sub-continent have seen significantly higher population growth due to birth than the Hindu-majority middle section. Taking the migration of mostly Hindus from Pakistan and Bangladesh to India into consideration, the difference in population growth due to birth would be more significant between Muslims and Hindus.

Make your own judgement as to how many Hindus have converted to Islam in the subcontinent between 1950-2010 or 1975-2000. I bet that number would be tens of thousands at the most; I personally know/heard of only a few.

Conclusion: The so-called fast growth of Islam is mostly due to excessive breeding.

Having said the above, I agree with Dr. Roy, Hindus and Jews do not care to convert others to their respective religions; nor do they stop anyone from converting to other religions. On the other hand, Muslims not only want to convert others to their religion; they even pose the danger of death to people who want to convert from Islam to other religions. These factors, however, do not change the conclusion that "The so-called fast growth of Islam is mostly due to excessive breeding."

Population growth may be partially responsible for the growth in Islam. Hinduism is probably growing pretty close to Islam due to population growth alone. I was pointing to the increased conversion rate in Islam.

Passion for religion among other groups is receding, but passion for Islam among Muslims is still vibrant. I think - this is because of the fact that Islam is the latest religion on earth. Islam provides handsome reward for Muslims who will recruit non-Muslims for conversion. Consequently, everyone of them is recruiting agent for Islam. This is not so in other religions. All these points need to be taken into account.

Recently, there was a posting in the Mukto-mona, which you may have seen. I think the story was from France, where a minor Christian girl met someone on the web, and got converted to Islam over the phone. She eloped with that older man, and got married. There are organized efforts from mosques, targeting non-Muslim girls for conversion. Hinduism or Judaism does not have anything like this. They soley depend on population growth. Christianity has conversion, but – Christians are losing interest in church already. They only depend on designated recruiting agents for conversion. All these factors should be taken into account.

I think Dr. Roy is doing too much of an analysis here. Islam is the fastest growing religion because of excessive breeding by backward and irresponsible people. Look at any developed and educated society in the world; their birthrates are generally low.

We often hear - Islam is the fasted growing religion on earth, meaning Islam is the most popular religion on earth.

My first question is - why is that so, in spite of all negative publicity arising from the worldwide terrorisms commit mostly by the Islamist-groups? Second question is – does this growth represent a bright future for Islam going forward?

This is what I think. Islam is the latest major religion on earth, and it is still going through the rising evangelical renaissance, which most other contemporary religions have already gone through, and now either reached  at the plateau or facing decline due to lack of interest in them. So, I would not make wager on this growth, since the over all trend in the world is towards indifference of religious faith. It is not hard to see the difference between a religious and an irreligious people. We can look at religious people in Bangladesh and judge which way to take.  Many of their leaders are accused of crimes against humanity. Do we want more of them in the society? If you do, you must examine your head ASAP.

What say you?
