Statement on "Islamic Terrorist" Attack on Mahabodhi Temple at Buddha Gaya
7 July 2013, New Delhi—Today early morning a series of nine bombs went exploded in and around the Mahabodhi Temple at Buddha Gaya, the place where the Buddha attained Enlightenment in the 6th century BCE. Five persons, including two Buddhist monks, were injured in the explosions.
Reports coming up suggest the involvement of "Islamic terrorists" in the attack.
Being the birthplace of the Buddha, Buddha Gaya is the holiest shrine of the Buddhists in the world. So it is not only an attack on the Mahabodhi Temple but also on the Buddhists of the world as a whole. Islamic terrorists deliberately targeted the temple to terrorise peace-loving Buddhists and Buddhism, the most growing Dhamma ('religion') in the world. It reminds us of the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhist civilization of Afghanistan with bombs by Taleban in 2001. Such barbaric attack will never serve the purpose of Islamic terrorists. It will rather strengthen the unity and solidarity among the Buddhists around the world.
We strongly condemn the Islamic terror strike on the Mahabodhi Temple at Buddha Gaya and call upon all Buddhists and secular-minded people of the world to take urgent and necessary steps to prevent repetition of such terrorist attacks on Buddhist shrines and heritage sites world-wide and to contain the menace of Islamic terrors for peace and harmony in the world.
We specifically urge the Government of India to strengthen all necessary security measures for safety of all Buddhist heritage sites in India.
