I have not read any of the books by Zafar Iqbal mentioned here. I remember having read one of his short stories titled "Copotronic bhalobasa" which he wrote as a student about 40 years ago. As far as I remember it was published in the weekly Bichitra. I enjoyed that piece of science fiction. Any way, sometimes a piece of literary work although inspired by a great piece by another author can look very original because of the presentation of the theme in different contexts and using different characters and places. As a result it looks very original.
Many critics have found Bankim's "Kapalkundala" as a piece of plagiarized fiction. But those who have read this novel should sense its own originality although Bankim might have been consciously or unconsciously influenced by an English novel.
Late Prof. Ajit Guha of Jagannath College used to challenge so passionately those critics who tried to establish that Nazrul's poem "Ogropothik" was a plagiarized work.
Humayun Azad's "Nari" also suffered a bad reputation like this.

I do not agree with Mr. Iqbal in some areas but I respect him. A lot of Bengali writers did take ideas from others. Don't think anyone should go after him for his atheist views or political views. As long he is civilized and not promoting violence, we have to allow some space in our society to place a different idea.
The best way to tackle his idea is to place a counter idea or have a lively discussion with him.
I think his net contribution to our country is positive and such personalities should have freedom to express their views. Hope we stop here with Mr. Iqbal and not make another Dr. Yunus type of scene. Let us not follow idiots.
Dr,. Yunus and Dr. Iqbal are good people but we do not have to agree with everything they say or do.
