Shias were originally followers of Zarathustra.  After the Persian empire collapsed mainly due to war of succession, the Arabians conquered them during the Caliphate of Umar bin Khattab.  The conquest and conversion of proud Persians took over a few decades to complete.  The Persians hate Umar till today, though they adopt Ali bin Abu Talib as the only legitimate Caliph, they have no reason to be united with the Sunni Muslims.  Besides the oil reach Dahran of K. S. A. is predominantly Shia in population. It belonged to the Persians.  A rise in Shia power would be detrimental to Riadh, hence they finance the ISIS.  When Prophet Muhammad died in 632, Islam did not even spread to Yemen, let alone the Shia land known as Persia.
