Comparatively the Hindu custom of 'gouridan' was lot worse.Be it mandatory or permissible-- it does not matter. No question should arise to marry a girl at a very early age. Many countries including India have laws not allowing to marry girls under certain age. This makes Gouridan illegal in India. As far as I know a certain section of the Ulema opposes this law as a result of which the Moslems are not affected by this legal restriction.

According to Hindu scripture, if a girl sees her menstrual blood before wedding, her father would be condemned to hell after death. Gouridan occurred before the age of eight. Mrinalini Devi, wife of Tagore, gave birth to her first child by the age of twelve. By the contemporary law, Tagore would be in jail for statutory rape. Child marriage is Sunnah, as she is not used as food, I am not sure if the word halal is appropriate or not.
