[mukto-mona] RE: {PFC-Friends} Our Condolence to Ajoy Sir for the inhuman end of his son Avijit's life

Dear Shahadat Suhrawardy,

Salaam. Thanks for your response. Sorry I do not have nice Bangla fonts like yours. So I have to respond in English. If I understood you correctly, you think the murder of Avijit is heinous (nrishongsho), and that any God-fearing Muslims will not do that. And you suspect this might be the work of the people of similar mind-set (Mukta-Mona) as that of the victim (Avijit) (this is unlikely and needs verification). You also think that Muslim extremists are blamed for this kind of activities for political reasons (true to some extent but not universally).

Your other point is that a God-fearing Muslims cannot be Mukto-Mona. I am not sure how best to define Mukto-Mona. Open minded, unprejudiced minded, liberal minded, enlightened minded, mind with a free will? I thought Muslims over the centuries claimed to be all of the above. In my view, people like Al-Farabi, Ibn al-Haytham, Al-Biruni, Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd, Nasiruddin Tusi, Ibn Khaldun (to name a few) were all Muslims and were all of Mukto-Mona type. I believe Quran does grant freedom of choice to humans (Quran 41:40 – "Do whatever you want, God certainly sees everything you do"). Quran also grants limited freedom of choice of faith, (Quran 2:256 – "There is no compulsion in religion: true guidance has become distinct from error." Quran 109:6 – "you have your religion and I have mine.") One may claim that the Mutazila (rational approach) movement, a pioneering thought in Muslim culture at one point in history, was quite consistent with the Mukto-Mona concept.

It seems you have introduced a new terminology "Jukto-Mona" as opposed to Mukto-Mona. You defined "Jukto-Mona" as the mindset of "God fearing Muslims". This seems to be a weak definition of terms. All Muslims by definition need to be God-fearing. Therefore Jukto-Mona should become synonymous with "Muslim-Mona" or "Islam-Mona". In that case Jukto-Mona becomes a redundant terminology.

Without getting into further jargons, here is the bottom line: Mukto-Mona is not wrong by Islamic or any other standard. Being an Athiest (as Avijit has been purported on be one) is also not wrong by Islamic or any other standard. Avijit did not do anything wrong. The people who killed him did something wrong. Whoever they are, Muslim or not (you think they are or not), should be made accountable, and should be taken out like a cancer cell. We need to take ownership of fixing this problem. Hiding behind labeling the perpetrators as non-Muslims will not help. It will only make us losers, both as Muslims and as Bangladeshis. We need to wake up.

Picture of Avijit and his wife Bonya

Dear Friends,

I request our friends at Dhaka University and Jahangir Nagar University Physics Departments (Siddique, Moqbul, Yusuf Haider, Kabir, Abu Saeed and others) to please convey our heartfelt condolence to our teacher Dr. Ajoy Roy, Avijit's wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, and the rest of the family for this tragedy. We do not have any words to console them. We are one with them in our feelings of sadness and outrage of this dastardly act.

For the perpetrators, I only have this prayer (quoting a Christian source), "Oh God, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Avijit is a proud son of Bangladesh and will remain so forever. His contribution to humanity will not end with this untimely termination of his life. We pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul.

I am including a BBC report on Avijit's death:

US-Bangladesh blogger Avijit Roy hacked to death (in Dhaka)

I blind copied a few of the Dhaka University Physics alumni in this email. Sorry about any potential duplications.

I have never read anything by the Kamran group, and it is unlikely that I will

But hacking people to death in a public place is very odious and sad. I hope the authorities can find those guilty and punish them---sooner rather than later.

If we do not like the laws of our new Western home, we can, and should, use all legal means to petition for a change. In an age when any and every opinion can be found on the web, no one should try to justify physical violence on those who express their opinion in a blog that no one is obligated to read.

Blogger Avijit hacked to death on DU campus

New Age Online

Avijit Roy, a US resident Bangladeshi blogger, died on Thursday night, hours after he was stabbed indiscriminately in head near the Teacher-Student Centre on the Dhaka University campus by a group of unidentified people, said the police.
Avijit, 38, and his wife Nafida Ahmed were attacked by miscreants while they were returning from Ekushey Book Fair on the Bangla Academy on foot at around 8.30pm.
Both were immediately rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
'He suffered severe injuries in the head and died around 10:00pm after he was brought to hospital,' said the duty doctor Sohel Ahmed.
Avijit, one of the admins of Mukto Mona blog, was earlier threatened that he would have to follow the fate of Humayun Azad, a DU teacher who was stabbed by miscreants on February 27, 2004 in a similar manner. He later died in Germany.
DU proctor Amzad Ali, after talking to victim's family, said Avijit had received threats because of his activities in the blog.
Avijits's father Ajay Roy is a retired professor of physics at Dhaka University, he said.
Rafida's left hand fingers were cut off.
DMCH police outpost inspector Mozzamel Haque told New Age that unidentified people on a CNG-run auto rickshaw stormed in the TSC area and stabbed the couple.
In February 2013 blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider in February was stabbed to death.

Is it the same Avijit whose son was killed in Dhaka. I read it in today's TV news.

Brothers and sisters of Internet groups:

It has been observed that some Internet groups started writing and posting articles trying to belittle the great religion Islam. These bigot groups are not only attacking Islam and also writing articles against our beloved Prophet (sas) and the Holy Qura`n. It is our moral and obligatory duty to face these shaytanic groups collectively.

Recently Syed Kamran Mirza (SKM) wrote an article in News From Bangladesh (an Internet English Newspaper) entitled "Quranic Erroneous Science and Contradictions!" Pl. Try to read the article, then you will be convinced about their mission. Some of them write using the fake name. One of them is Syed Kamran Mirza. It is a fake name. He is neither Syed, nor Mirza either. He lives in Maryland area and works for US Dept. of Agriculture, originally a graduate of Agriculture U. of Mymensingh. His true name is Khorshed A. Chowdhury. He and many of his Mukto-mona friends have a clear agenda to eradicate Islam from the globe and use all kinds of attacks in their website: http://www.mukto-mona.com/new_site/mukto-mona/index.htm which is run by an anti-Muslim bigot by the name of Avijit Roy, son of ex-DU faculty, Ajoy Roy (who writes on how our people have been cleansing his fellow Hindus from B'desh). They have few websites with similar agenda to belittle our deen: http://www.mukto-mona.com/link/index.htm.

There is another bigot group: http://www.faithfreedom.org/ that cooperates with Mukto-Mona. A pro-Shah Irani runs it by the name of Ali Sina. This group has also been able to bring together many anti-Muslim bigots to vent their attack against Islam and everything it upholds. M. Asghar, Abul Kasem and quite a few of these bigots, including SKM write regularly on these sites.
