For Mr. Ray, let me first say that I share your sadness. Second, I think the talk of secularism and freedom of speech in the context of the 1971 liberation struggle is grossly exaggerated, albeit quite widespread among the secular and pseudo-secular intellectuals of Bangladesh. The reality was that the Bangalees Muslims could not take the discrimination and disrespect from the Western Pakistani brothers. However, the sense of a Muslim nation was not lost; as evidenced by the widespread acceptance of the supremacy of Allah and Islam by the state, including by the present 'secular' government.

And, for Avijit, I do not think Bangladeshis really care much about him. He is just another name and people are already openly justifying his gruesome murder. That is our reality in Bangladesh. And it is not going to change anytime soon.
