RE: [mukto-mona] A non-Aryan goddess from Bengal

Why are you being so defensive, Subimal?  I chose the heading -- 'non-Aryan' deliberately (and proudly) for drawing attention to the non-Aryan nature of Bangla's indigenous people whose Goddess was Kali.  These are the people who evolved into practicing Hindus, as they came into contact with Brahmin settlers from the West of Bengal, in the Western part of Bengal after AD 8th century. The inner part of Bengal was jungle-ridden, not very densely populated, and the scattered population were not followers of any organized religion. 

All religions have tribal origins.  Think of the Greeks and their glorious mythologies that incorporated the tribal deities into the Canonical gods and goddesses. The Abrahamic religions had their tribal lores too. The Qur'an incorporates many of them into its text.

The daily Ananda Bazaar of August 11 has covered it as a news item. The reporter has seen this positively. Obviously there is a risk that many will have negative impression about the Hindu religion. Those who have watched Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the temple of doom know already about goddess Kali. 

Joseph Campbell has called Hinduism a tribal religion. Obviously at least one aspect of it is so. The Upanishads may not be called tribal. That a religion is tribal does not reduce it to a lesser religion. Joseph Campbell, a scholar on comparative mythology and religion, has never undermined this tribal aspect of Hinduism.
