Re: [mukto-mona] More atheists and agnostics entering Harvard than Protestants and Catholics

Where there is no prof there is controversy.

We can break religion in two parts – 1) believing in God, and 2) worshipping God. There is no controversy over the first part, but second part is controversial, because different religious faiths prescribe different ritualistic practices to worship God.
All religions agree on the concept that God exists in spirit. If that's the view, what's the point of ritualistic practices to worship a non-existent spirit?
As a result, most (smart) people usually believe in God, but try to avoid the controversial second part in their lives, as much as possible. This way - their mental faculties remain free from numerous ritualistic practices, which enable them to think about other constructive ideas that make them successful in life.

You have a point. But things do not seem to be so simple. How much 'religious garbage' will fill one's mental faculty varies from person to person. Rabindranath probably had almost zero 'religious garbage' in his mind. He had a God, but he did not share many religious views like casteism, animal sacrifice, subjugation of women, etc. We cannot call him an atheist. Religion is an integral part of human society and as such it is almost impossible even for a creative genius to escape its influence. This will be particularly true for creative geniuses from less industrialized countries.

I do not think rationalists (atheists) get offended so easily, nor do they need defending.

As for the question by Mr. Chakrabarty, most people in the world over the last few millennia had religious baggage. Thus, many of the creative geniuses in the world had two compartments in their brain; one filled mostly with religious garbage and the other filled mostly with rational thinking. You need to realize that in its early days even Harvard was under clergy control. So, it was only natural that a lot of the creative geniuses in the world were not atheists. But guess what, the world is progressing and the control of intellectual exercises at places like Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, etc. are no longer in the hands of the clergy. And there is a trend of diminishing size of the religious garbage compartment in the brains of the geniuses, as well as a trend of having more atheists and agnostics being seen in prestigious schools like Harvard.

I have no intention to offend or defend the atheists. I have a simple humble question: Were or are all the creative geniuses atheists?

This is expected, because atheists can direct unfettered creativity into practice, whereas, religiosity wastes part of the creativity of a person.
