[mukto-mona] Remembering Avijit Roy

It is hard to believe a year has passed since that sad day when Avijit Roy was brutally killed by the brute Islamic extremists. He was always in our minds for all these days and he will always be remembered for spreading the philosophy of free thinking and rationalism in Bangladesh. He made systematic efforts to create a network of Bangladesh origin free thinkers through his scholarly writings and propagating these through his renowned web site "Mukto-Mona". Many of the young generation comrades have been highly influenced by him. His efforts will not go in vain. His able followers have already become the new torchbearers for free thinking in Bangladesh.

Following the killing of Avijit, some of the other freethinkers were killed by the Islamic terrorists mainly because of the inaction of the government law enforcement agencies. Many freethinkers had to leave Bangladesh just to save their lives. While staying abroad, they are not sitting idle. As a well-connected global village, the present-day world has given them immense opportunities to spread their opinions and philosophies against the traditional uncorroborated beliefs and obscurantism. As I observe, they are well aware of the increased opportunities and they are making every effort to seize the day that they have. Avijit will always remain in the domain of the freethinkers in Bangladesh and in the realm of his philosophy that he divulged so passionately.
