দেখা যাচ্ছে বিরোধী দলগুলোর সিংহভাগ এই সংশোধনী বিল পাশের বিষয়ে চরম বিরূপ প্রতিক্রিয়া ব্যক্ত করে। বিএনপি চেয়ারপার্সন খালেদা জিয়া দাবী করেন এই বিল পাশ 'ধর্মের নামে জাতিকে বিভক্ত করার চেষ্টা', অন্যদিকে বর্তমান প্রধানমন্ত্রী এবং তৎকালীন আরেক বিরোধী দলীয় নেত্রী আওয়ামী লীগের সভানেত্রী শেখ হাসিনাও দাবী করেন 'সংবিধানের সংশোধনী জনগণ মানিবে না'। আওয়ামী লীগ, বিএনপি এবং অন্যান্য দল রাস্তায় মিছিল করে, এবং যানবাহন ভাংচুর/অগ্নিসংযোগের ঘটনাও ঘটে। বুঝা যাচ্ছে যে এই সংশোধনী বিল দেশের সব বৃহত্তম রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোই প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছিল।

State religion is not a big deal. It depends on governance and socio-political culture of a country.
The Christian Cross is there in the British and many other European national flags. The leaders of these 'secular' countries including USA take oath keeping their hands on the Bible.
These countries had been continuing occupying , oppressing, plundering, looting and killing nations and nationalities. The Mayans and Incas by Spain, Red Indians/Apaches/Mohicans/Navajos/Arabs/ Muslims by the Anglo-Americans, Uighurs and others by China, Africans by the Europeans. The list is endless.
India is a 'secular' country but communalism is the order of the day there.
ভারত বিশ্বের অন্যতম উদার গণতান্ত্রিক রাষ্ট্র সেখানে রাষ্ট্রধর্ম বলতে কিছু নেই সেখানকার প্রায় আশি শতাংশ জনগোষ্ঠীই হিন্দু বাকি বিশ ভাগের প্রায় চৌদ্দ ভাগই মুসলিম জনগোষ্ঠী। ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ রাষ্ট্র হওয়ার পরও দিন দিন দেশটিতে সাম্প্রদায়িক সহিংসতা বেড়েই চলছে। সরকারি হিসাব মতে ২০১৫ সালে সাম্প্রদায়িক সহিংসতা ঘটেছে ৭৫১টি এতে কমপক্ষে ৯৭ জন প্রাণ হারিয়েছে আহত ২,২৬৪ জন /
বাড়িতে গরুর মাংস রেখে খেয়েছে এমন গুজবে দেশটির উত্তর প্রদেশের কোনো এক গ্রামে গত বছর মোহাম্মদ আখলাক নামের এক ব্যক্তিকে পিটিয়ে হত্যা করা হয়। এরপর বিভিন্ন সময় মুসলিম সাংসদ থেকে গরু ব্যবসায়ীর ওপর হামলার কথা প্রকাশ হয় ভারতের নানা সংবাদ মাধ্যমে। ২০০২ সালে গুজরাটের দাঙ্গার কথা কারোই অজানা নয় যে দাঙ্গায় নিহত হয়েছিল কমপক্ষে ১২০০ মানুষ, যাদের অধিকাংশই ছিল মুসলমান/
বর্তমান সরকার ও তার দল আওয়ামী লীগ সবসময়ই ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতায় বিশ্বাসী বলে আমরা জানি তারপরেও তার তিন বার রাষ্ট্রীয় ক্ষমতায় থাকার পরও বর্তমানে আমাদের সংবিধানে রাষ্ট্রধর্ম ইসলাম বিদ্যমান।
সবচেয়ে মজার ব্যাপার হলো, গত কয়েক বছরে সংখ্যালঘুদের ওপর হামলার পরিসংখ্যান ঘাটলে কখনও কখনও পাওয়া যায় বেশির ভাগ ঘটনায় ক্ষমতাসীন দলের সক্রিয় সদস্যদের সরাসরি অংশগ্রহণ রয়েছে/ এর আগে আমরা দেখেছি বিএনপি জামায়াত জোট ক্ষমতায় থাকা অবস্থায় দেশের নানা স্থানে সংখ্যালঘু গোষ্ঠীর ওপর নারকীয় হামলার চিত্র। ধর্মান্ধ অংশ আত্মতুষ্টিতে ভোগে নানা আজুহাতে নিজেদের স্বার্থ হাসিলের জন্য ধর্মকে ব্যবহার করে সংখ্যালঘু সম্প্রদায়ের ওপর নানা অত্যাচার ও নির্যাতন চালায়।
সমাজের সংখ্যা গরিষ্ঠদের একটি অংশ সুযোগ পেলে সংখ্যালঘুদের সম্পদ আত্মসাতের চেষ্টা চালায়। সেই চেষ্টা স্বার্থক হওয়ার জন্য চাই কোনো না কোনো বাহানা। সমাজের সেই সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠরা ধর্মকে সেই বাহানা হিসেবে যুগযুগ ধরে ব্যবহার করে আসছে।
আমাদের দেশের আইন এ ব্যাপারে যথেষ্ট শক্তিশালী অথচ আইন প্রয়োগের দুর্বলতা, একশ্রেণির মানুষের হীনমন্যতা ও হীন স্বার্থপরতাই সংখ্যালঘু সম্প্রদায়ের ওপর নির্যাতনের মূল কারণ।
