I understand the frustration of Mr. Qamaruddin Chowdhury. He is not alone.
BNP has many weaknesses and committed umpteen blunders (non participation of January 5 farce is not one). We in this forum have been pointing out over and over again those issues with concrete suggestions to fix them, but with no avail. I believe Jalal Khan's has been one such forceful voice. Even on the late Suranjit, he commented: "BNP statements were too innocent, too dull n docile, servile n slavish." However, I at times cannot go with his strong loyalty to KZ and TZ.
Whether we like it or not, BNP still remains the only alternative, and potentially the potent force, to the BAKSALi fascism. It's grass root support is strong. But the problem is in its leadership, that includes Begum Khaleda Zia. It has waned, deteriorated. KZ is no more the uncompromising leader people had seen in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her physical condition does not seem to be conducive either to undertake very dynamic political activities. It is pointed out that her loss of husband and one son and near loss of the other might have made her mind and resolve weak, and that she was not expected to "swim with her hands and feet tied." Frankly, I don't agree with these arguments. If one is a leader, one needs to rise above those handicaps. Recently, Mina Farah wrote a very strong piece suggesting that KZ should have taken those personal losses or impediments as challenge to face the ruling fascism, and I agree. Alas, that does not seem to be coming. KZ should also remember that she is facing a leader who has not been seen sneezing even once since her release from "Jail" in 2008, and has remained omni visible. As such, I am coming close to Mr. Gani who strongly advocate "Minus Two." We also need to come out of the notion of "indispensability" factor. To me, while indispensability of the party (BNP) is true, its leadership is not.

আওয়ামী লীগের উপদেষ্টা পরিষদের সদস্য ও প্রবীণ রাজনীতিক সুরঞ্জিত সেনগুপ্তের জীবনাবসানে, মরদেহে শ্রদ্ধা জানানোর সময় ফখরুল, সুরঞ্জিতকে "সৎ ও নিষ্ঠাবান" বলে আখ্যায়িত করেন। অপর দিকে, খালেদা এক বিবৃতিতে বলেন, দেশমাতৃকার মুক্তির জন্য সুরঞ্জিত সেনগুপ্ত যে অবদান রেখেছেন, তা জাতি কোনোদিন ভুলবে না।
এ বক্তব্য দুটি, বিরোধীমহলের কেউ কেউ রাজনৈতিক সৌজন্য ও মহানুভবতার বিরল দৃষ্টান্ত হিসাবে দেখেন, আবার অনেকে বলেন তা অন্য কাউকে সন্তুষ্টির প্রচেষ্টা।
সুরঞ্জিতের "সততা" প্রসঙ্গেঃ সুরঞ্জিত রেলমন্ত্রী থাকা কালীন ৪০০ কোটি টাকা দুর্নীতির খবর কাগজে বেরিয়েছিল, এবং তার নিজের ভাগের এক দফায় ৭০ লাখ টাকা, ঢাকার জিগাতলায় তার বাসার কাছে, হাতে নাতে ধরা পড়ায় তার রেলমন্ত্রীত্ব যায়, যদিও বাইরের প্রভাবে তাকে দপ্তরবিহীন মন্ত্রী করে রাখা হয়। তখন থেকে তিনি জাতীয়ভাবে 'কালো বিড়াল' বলে পরিচিত হন। কারো কারো মতে এই দুর্নীতি ধামাচাপা দেবার অপচেষ্টায় ইলিয়াস আলীকে গুম করা হয়। সংবাদপত্রে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে, তিনি কয়েকশ' একর জমি দখল করে আত্মসাত করেছিলেন এবং দখলকৃত একটি জমিতে 'সেন মার্কেট' নামক একটি বহুতল বিশিষ্ট ভবন নির্মাণ করেছেন। তা ছাড়া তার বক্তব্যঃ "মসজিদ মাদ্রাসা বন্ধ না করলে অরাজকতা থামবেনা", "ধার্মিক হলে এদেশ ছেড়ে সৌদি আরব চলে যান" ইত্যাদি খুবই নিন্দনীয়, এবং তা কোনোক্রমেই সমর্থন করা যায় না। তার দুর্নীতি সম্বন্ধে ভারত-বাকশাল কাগজ 'সমকাল'-এ দেখুনঃ সাবেক সাংসদের সংবাদ সম্মেলনঃ
ওয়াকফ ও অর্পিত সম্পত্তি দখলের অভিযোগ সুরঞ্জিতের বিরুদ্ধে
স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে সুরঞ্জিতের ভূমিকা প্রসঙ্গেঃ আমাদের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে প্রধানতঃ তিনটি রাজনৈতিক শক্তিবর্গ কাজ করেছেঃ
(১) পাকিস্তান-আমেরিকাঃ যারা সামরিক অভিযান ও গণহত্যার মাধ্যমে বিদ্রোহ দমন করতে চেয়েছিল, (২) ভারত-সোভিয়েত রাশিয়াঃ যারা পাকিস্তান বিভক্ত করে বাংলাদেশকে ভারত-রাশিয়ার অধীন একটি করদ রাজ্য বানাতে চেয়েছিল, এবং (৩) বাংলাদেশের ব্যাপক জনগণ ও দেশপ্রেমিক সেনাবাহিনী যারা উপরের দুই পক্ষের কাছে নতি স্বীকার না করে স্বাধীন ও সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশ গড়ে সকল দেশের সঙ্গে বিজয়-বিজয় সম্পর্ক রাখতে চেয়েছিল।
ভাসানী ও জিয়া সহ বাংলাদেশের সকল দেশপ্রেমিক উপরোক্ত ৩য় শক্তিবর্গে অবস্থান করেন। সুরঞ্জিত ছিলেন উপরোক্ত ২য় শক্তিবর্গে, যার আজীবন লক্ষ্য ছিল বাংলাদেশকে ভারতের করদ রাজ্য বানানো।
আওয়ামী ফ্যাসীবাদ সম্পর্কেঃ হাসিনা সরকারের তিনটি বড় হত্যাকাণ্ড (বিডিআর, জামাত ও হেফাজাতের উপর), নির্বিচার হত্যা, সন্ত্রাস, গুম, নির্যাতন, নিপীড়ন, হামলা-মামলা, সীমাহীন দুর্নীতি, ইত্যাদি এবং সর্বোপরি বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় স্বার্থ ও সার্বভৌমত্ব ভারতের হাতে তুলে দেওয়া, - এগুলি গণতন্ত্র নয়, বরং এগুলি অত্যন্ত বর্বর ও নগ্ন ফ্যাসিবাদ এবং নিখাদ তাঁবেদারি।
গত ১৯ মার্চ ২০১৬ বিএনপি কাউন্সিলে ফখরুল বলেন, "গত কয়েক বছরে সরকারের দমন-পীড়ন ও পুলিশ এবং সরকারি দলের সন্ত্রাসীদের গুলিতে বিএনপির ৫০২ জন নেতা-কর্মী নিহত হয়েছেন। এই সময়ের মধ্যে ২২৩ জন নেতা-কর্মী অপহৃত হয়েছেন। গুরুতর আহত হয়েছেন চার হাজার। জেল খেটেছেন প্রায় ৭৫ হাজার। প্রায় ২৪ হাজার মামলা হয়েছে এবং এতে চার লাখ ৩০ হাজার জনকে আসামি করা হয়েছে। মিথ্যা মামলায় ৫০ জনকে যাবজ্জীবন কারাদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়েছে।"
