A Sylhet court on Tuesday jailed Naser Rahman, son of former finance minister Saifur Rahman, for nine years in an extortion case.

The additional district and sessions judge, Binoy Kumar Mazumder, also jailed former Road and Highway executive engineer in Sylhet Abdul Khalique, former Roads and Highways executive engineer in Moulvibazar Shafiqul Islam and former organising secretary of the Moulvibazar BNP Wali Siddiquee for five years each.

The court acquitted Moulvibazar municipal chairman Fayzul Karim Mayun and former Roads and Highways sub-divisional engineer in Moulvibazar Road Monwar Sadik of the charge.

The verdict in the case against Sylhet city BNP president Ariful Haque Chowdhury was postponed on a High Court order.

Nuruzzaman, executive director of a construction firm at Mirabazar in Sylhet, filed the case with the Kotwali police against M Saifur Rahman, Naser Rahman, also a former lawmaker, and six others on charge of extorting Tk 2.85 crore from him.

The police on February 17 registered the case dropping M Saifur Rahman off the list of the accused.

Nuruzzaman, in the first information report, claimed Naser Rahman with others accused misappropriated Tk 2.85 crore by drawing the money illegally from the his [Nuruzzaman] account with the Karwan Bazar branch Oriental Bank in Dhaka and Chauhatta branch Southeast Bank in Sylhet.

He deposited the amount in earnest money against the tenders of the Road and Highway Department.

The plaintiff said Naser, after taking him to the house of the Sylhet city BNP president at Kumarpara on October 11, 2003, demanded Tk 1 crore against five tenders under a development project which the construction firm won.
