Neem Chandra Bhowmick, one of the four Dhaka University teachers charged with the August 20-22 campus protests, was sent to jail on Tuesday after he surrendered in a metropolitan magistrate’s court in Dhaka.

Magistrate SM Ferdous Alam passed the order after Bhowmick, professor of applied physics, appeared in the court.

The magistrate on September 13 issued a warrant for arrest of Neem Chandra and his fellow, Sadrul Amin, also the president of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association, and 16 leaders of student wings of the Awami League and the BNP as they did not appear in court in connection with the hearing in the case.

Sadrul, professor of English and arts dean, was sent to jail on Sunday after he had surrendered in the court.

‘The charges brought against me are false and baseless,’ Bhowmick told the media after the court order.

Bhowmik’s lawyers appealed for division facilities and treatment for him as there was no provision to seek bail under the Emergency Powers Rules.

The magistrate asked the jail authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for Bhowmick, but did not allow division facilities in jail. But the chief metropolitan magistrate, Jalal Ahmed, asked the authorities to ensure division facilities for the teacher on plea from the defence counsels.

With Bhowmick, all the four teachers, accused in the case, are now behind bars on charge of breaching the Emergency Powers Rules by instigating demonstrators during the three-day campus protests.

The teachers’ association general secretary, Anwar Hossain, social sciences dean Harun-or-Rashid and student Moniruzzaman Sarder of Jasimuddin Hall were arrested by the joint forces late August.

Sixteen Chhatra Dal and Chhatra League leaders, charged with leading the demonstrators, are yet to surrender in court.

The investigation officers of the three cases in connection with campus protests, on September 9 submitted the charge sheet against 21 people.
