Awami League activists attack, torch 60 houses in Narsingdi village Local people said the clashes originated in personal rivalry between the UP chairman and Jubo League leader Abdus Satter Hundreds of angry activists of Awami League attacked and torched some 60 houses at Sarrabad village in Belabo Upazila under Narsingdi district on Wednesday, protesting the killing of a local Awami Juba League leader. All the villagers, including Union Parishad chairman Zahirul Haque Tanvir, fled from the village when the rampaging activists of the ruling Awami League and its associate organisations attacked the village, police and witnesses said. They said some 500 activists of the ruling party, armed with lethal weapons, attacked the houses of Zahirul Haque and other villagers and set the houses on fire after looting valuables. The violence, according to local people and police, is a sequel to a fight on the evening of June 16 when the local Juba League leader, Abdus Satter (42), was shopping at Narayanpur bazar and came under attack from Tanvir, the UP chairman, and 10 to 12 of his sidekicks. Sattar, who was mercilessly beaten up, died on the spot, they alleged. Forces of Rapid Action Battalion, police and fire service rushed to Sarrabad village to control the situation. All the villagers managed to flee to save their life, they said. Local people said the clashes originated in personal rivalry between the UP chairman and Jubo League leader Abdus Satter over control of the locality. |
