Bangladesh FM says that There is Nothing Unusual in Myanmar Border: We Want a Peaceful Border

Dhaka press has reported that Foreign affairs minister Dipu Moni on Sunday rejected media reports on Myanmar’s sudden reinforcement of troops along the border, terming such mobilisation of border guards as a ‘routine movement’. Briefing reporters at her office, the minister also said that Myanmar’s mobilization of troops had no link with Bangladesh’s decision to seek the UN’s arbitration to determine the maritime boundary between the two next-door neighbors.  Referring to her telephone conversation with Bangladesh’s ambassador in Yangon and the foreign affairs secretary’s latest  discussion with Myanmar’s ambassador in Dhaka, Dipu Moni said, ‘It [mobilization of troops along the border] is a routine movement of Myanmar’s forces.’ Dipu Moni came up with the above views a few days after reports were received from Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar of significant increase in the number of Myanmar’s troops along the border. Responding to a query on whether Myanmar’s junta has gone by the international norms while putting up the barbed wire fence, she said, ‘Myanmar is constructing a fence in its own territory, which in conformance with international laws, so we have nothing to say about it.’ The foreign minister said she has no specific information of the forcible gathering of Rohingyas by Myanmar’s soldiers for pushing them into Bangladesh.

We want normalization and friendly relation with Myanmar. It was always so until recently except for Rohingya issue. The ethnic issue in Myanmar is old.The ethnic minorities there have many complaints and there are some insurgencies there. In the Muslim majority state of Akyab in the border of Bangladesh , the Muslims have double minority status as they are a religious and ethnic minority. This should be realized by the both the governments. Before any push back, Bangladesh should take stock of the situation there.Myanmar government also should take more care of the Rohingya Muslims because of their vulnerability.

We are happy at the assurance of the Foreign Minister. We are happy that is nothing unusal is happening there. We want a peaceful border with Myanmar.
