[mukto-mona] Iqbal & Fanatacism

I had studied Allama Iqbal, the greatest Islamic scholar of 20th century, since my high school days in Quetta Pakistan. Honestly, I had fallen in love with his metaphysics and studied most of his works in great detail. His forceful Persianized style of poetry--was intoxicating, invigorating and had mesmerizing Jihaadi impact  on all the Muslims of Subcontinent---especially me! I memorized his four major works—Baang-e-Dara—Baal-e-Jibreel---Zarb-e-Kaleem and Armagaa-ne-Hijaz, by heart. I thought, his historical, dialectical analysis of Muslim malaise and disgraceful condition in the 20th century made sense and my restless soul finally found the answer---that is, until I reached Washington 35 years ago. Here, it was a shocker—as if I woke up from a bad dream. Even here it took me very long time to accept the reality because of mental despotism that had consumed me due to that early brain washing in Quetta Pakistan. Here it dawned upon me that 'this man is a lost fanatic and some of his intellectual analysis of Muslim suffering  is nothing but wishful thinking of a slave of Allah, totally devoid of the ground realities of the world we live in. Says Iqbal---You (Allah) have made them (The Muslims) indifferent to the riches of the world, by instilling Your love divine into their hearts. Except for the love of Jehad and the joy of martyrdom, the kingdom of the earth holds no attraction for them. This is the magic of Your Love Divine. It is the last wish and the greatest desire of a true Muslim! Reasoned our Slave of Allah, 'The extinction of religious fervor combined with embracement of Freedom-- not only led to the termination of Muslim rule in Spain-- but also imperiled the very existence of the followers of Islam in that country-- till not one of them was left'. The message is very clear—Freedom is very Dangerous--this world is for Kafirs. No need to use your head. Just read Quran, you will find all the answers here. You will find 'String Theory' here. You will find 'Periodic Table' here; you will find 'Hubble Constant' here; you will find theory of Electro Magnetism here; you will find cure for diabetes here; In short, you will find all the scientific theories here.  Memorize it with ultimate dedication and you shall see the heart of Scientist of all Scientists—The Prophet Himself! Friends- These are the forces of Darkness that shut the door to Independent reasoning and drew the line in the sands of 7th Century Arabia. Allah will definitely forgive those unfortunate folks who did not have the good fortune to attend Kindergarten or Scholistica---but He will never forgive the so called educated fools of today--It never ceases to amaze me that in this enlightened-- most technologically advanced civilization-- we have Iqbals among us. How sad, how pathetic, how deplorable, how wretched, how vile and indeed how sickening—it makes one throw up. We are truly in a quagmire of tsunamical proportion. Tagore warned—never surrender reason—Says he "Deliverance is not for me in renunciation. I feel the embrace of freedom in a thousand bonds of delight---no I shall never shut the doors of my Senses".  And among the believers, the Iqbals will always carry the day!

Our Second Liberation War against Indian Aggression
Mr. Devdas:
You don't compare orange with apple. Sadam was a dictator, committed genocide, Afganistan is a Taliban state. Both had direct American interest in those two countries.  Bangladesh is different from those states. One has oil another had the 9/11 event. You are wrong. You are totally wrong! If you are an political analyst, you are lost a long time ago. You are either fooled by your associates or you are simply a naive person fooling yourself and trying to fool others for some reason we don't know. You are being corrupted by your Bengali nationalism which is a thing of the past. You have to think clearly as a Bangladeshi.

We fought against Pakistan to survive as an independent state. Bangladesh has to take the example of Cuba, located next to the giant USA. It has to take the example of Japan that defeated Russia and China and Singapore as an economic power. Georgia lived next to the Giant Russia. If people are alert and protest, a neighbouring giant even can't walk all over you.

Bangladesh is not Bhutan it is not a landlocked country; it has developed international Diasporas. India lives amid the international community. You see, India pretends itself as a nonviolent state. A progressive country with the face of Gandhi as the icon of peace. But the world knows that India's opposition party came to poer through violence; people know their agenda. If you know it is one of the poorest countries with its majority suffering in poverty. As a socalled peace-loving country, it even demands the UN security council membership. Here we are to show the real face of India.

This is our second liberation war. Every Bangladeshi; AL, BNP, Jamat or anybody who sympathizes with Bangladesh will fight for its rights. It is their country. Bangladeshis abroad and inside Bangladesh have to help the mother country to shame India. You see, one don't waste time to help one's beloved motherland.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the most popular leader of Bangladesh followed the fools advise and listened to India; conceded to Farakka dam opening, signed the 25 years treaty, gave Barubari and opened its border and turned Bangladesh into a bottomless busket and ended up both himself and him family dead; the nation didn't cry for such naive thinking like you, Devdas! So remember the likes of prostutes never become prosperous. After this letter, if you understand, tell your friends you are wrong!

Now Hasina is going by the Indian Dada rules to open the Tipaimukh dam, elected by the pro-indian caretaker government, she is doing the same mistake. There are international laws that India can not break. India can not do anything it wants. It can fool and rule but can not walk all over if you are awake. A prostitue opens her body to somebody who has money and power but a conscious person our mother can guard herself easily. The people who possess the defeatest mentality are simply behaving like prostutes. They still use the ghost of the Pakistanis to support the Indian agenda. In this newspapers like daily star, prothom alo find themselves as being progressive. What a shame!

India fooled us once, it is trying to fool us twice. It can fool people like you but not the one who knows how Cuba survived, or Georgia trying to survive. You don't have to tell, we know it is difficult to be a neighbour of a big brother but you have to be alert and tough. Don't forget Bangladeshis fought against the British, Pakistan; it has to now fight India. The point is after a country becomes independent, it is on its own and it has to develop skills for its survival, otherwise it doesn't survive. For countries, it the the survival of the fittest!

So you can fool yourself but don't fool others. You call yourself as a poet. Do you know that some poets are intelligent people ofcourse when they live their livelihood on their honestly earned money?

Shame on you Devdas to put your people down with a defeatist mentality but you somehow showing off as if like a scholar. My advise to you is to educate yourself first than show others to learn from you. But will you learn from this? I doubt it.

"The great masses of the people will more easily fall victims to a great lie than to a small one." (Adolph Hitler)

I warn you guys, as I warned Saddam and Ahmedinijad- ---be very careful, the Tipaimukh Dam game is nothing but a great strategic deception engineered by New Delhi to trap Dhaka further into this Political and economical quagmire. BNP and her Allies--- belligerence, bellicosity and intransigence reminds me of Saddam's stand against mighty America . O' how we Muslim love to commit suicide! The rightist politicians in Bangladesh are deeply suspicious of India 's grand game plan and are deeply paranoid about it. Their allies, the Jamaatis, have grandiose ambitions to re-create the Glory days of Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi and establish the Khilafat on the soil of entire Subcontinent. Intellectual and moral Bankruptcy of our anti-India posture is truly prosaic and myopic at best. The US , the Russians, and the EU have already conceded the hegemony of India in South Asia . The Indian's have setup naval bases in East African territories of Madagascar , Mozambique , Seychelles , and Mauritania . Mauritius offered its Agalega Islands to India on a 100 year lease term ostensibly for development as tourist destinations. The navies of five countries - India , Singapore , the United States , Japan and Australia regularly participate in naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal . To its west, India has been holding joint naval exercises in the Gulf of Oman , the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea with such countries as Oman , Iran and France . Only the militant Pakis and we think otherwise on this very vital issue. The Indians, armed with the largest Scientist force in the world, are beating the hell out of the Americans in every field. In last five years, more than Three Million Indians left USA for lucrative jobs in India . Doesn't common sense dictate that we the Bangladeshis also recognize this reality and act accordingly? After Mangle Pandey's revolution against the British in 1857---the wise Hindus, decided to beat the Brits by obeying them and learn from them. As a result, the British built the finest engineering schools in India ---owing to that, India landed on Moon in 2008! Back then, the Muslims listened to Deobandis and Brelevis---not that Kafir Sir Syed Ahmed Khan---with devastating and disastrous far reaching consequences for the Muslims of the world! Islamic history of last 1000 years is replete with these militant voices. How very sad and unfortunate indeed. Will we Muslims ever learn?

India's Farakka Barrage to Tipaimukh: Bangladesh's Options

.M.T. Hussain

The unpalatable
After getting nod of Bangladesh for the river Ganges' water withdrawal by India in May 1974 at the Farakka Barrage point up 17 kilometers of the common border of the two countries, and what is called at the downstream the Padma river of Bangladesh in the west, India has taken now to build two dams at Tipamukh and Fulertal in the east on the river Barak that forms upper riparian of the Kushiara, Surma and mighty Meghna rivers of Bangladesh. The evils of Farakka in the three and a half decades in the downstream incurred yearly losses in money term at 150,000 lakhs crores Taka and the incoming Eastern two are estimated to incur yearly loss for Bangladesh at Taka 225,000 lakhs crores. Farrakka Barrage adversely affected the western and southwestern territory of one third Bangladesh and the eastern two dams to affect one fourth of Bangladesh in the eastern area.
My experience and some works
On the Farakka Barrage issue I had my first book (India's Farakka Barrage… now out of print) published in 1996. I was then fortunate not only to have facts from documents of the Bangladesh Government source but also from other published documents about the issue here and elsewhere at the international level. I was also fortunate to have a very close rapport with the renowned hydrological expert B M Abbas during his last days before passing away in Dhaka, in addition to useful information I had from his authoritative book The Ganges Water Dispute. Just a few months back I had two articles, one in Bengali and the other in English on the same topic of Farakka losses incurred by Bangladesh that I took advantage of an occasion of follow up of a surface scratching by the BBC Bengali Radio discussion meeting held at Rajshahi a few months earlier on the effects of the India's Farakka Barrage in Bangladesh as the razzmatazz of the discussion had nothing of losses of Bangladesh in concrete terms of money figure. In the two articles mentioned and published in dailies in Dhaka I cited figures in specific calculated terms. The figure of Bangladesh losses for 33 years since May 1974, the time the Farakka went on in full commission to 2007 at nearly 49 lakhs crore Taka, that made yearly average of about one and a half lakh crore Taka. A research organization based in the USA and corroborated by a local organization in their calculation for likely losses of Bangladesh due to the India's Tipaimukh Dam would still be higher at over two lakhs crore Taka than the yearly average due to the Farakka, thus exceeding yearly average of about one lakh crore Taka losses that Bangladesh has been incurring due to the death trap of the Farakka Barrage.
Miseries of millions on both sides
Although there were groups against the Farakka project in West Bengal and Bihar before the barrage was erected, as one was renowned irrigation engineer Kapil Bannerjee (See weekly Holiday, 29 May 09), there are groups, as well, against the other two proposed dams. The Tipaimukh dam to be built at 500 meters downstream of the confluence of the Barak and Tuivai rivers is planned for generation of 1,500MW of hydro-electricity and the Fulertal one for irrigation purpose there in the Eastern India. The likely affected ones included common poor people as also objections raised by area experts, environmentalists, etc. Because, the Dam if erected and made operational is certain to affect lives and livings of many people engaged in agriculture in the project region, fisheries and fishing trade, river craft works and to adversely affect ecological balance that may even add to risks of bigger scale earth quakes in the region according to the noted earth science expert and famous geologist like Dr. Soibam Ibotombi, Professor of the Indian Manipur University
International river rules and conventions
International rivers are well designated so for that they flow through many countries. The Ganges and the Barak are international rivers. There are international rules and conventions that guide modes of sharing waters of such rivers between countries in the riparian regions. The upper riparian country, in particular, is not permitted by the rules and conventions to withdraw and divert water of any amount that would harm the lower riparian country/s. The 1997 UN convention adopted two key issues, one, in gist stated by two words, 'no harm' and the other 'equitable sharing'. To elaborate the implications of the two set of terms, one can safely state that the upper riparian country can do no harm to lower riparian country by withdrawing or diverting normal natural flow of water, and if any such withdrawal and diversion is at all to be done, such mode must have prior sanction of the lower riparian country subject to the condition of mutually agreed equitable sharing. There are examples of such water sharing treaties between countries like Egypt and Sudan for the Nile waters, Germany and Hungary for the Danube, Pakistan and India for the Sind just to cite as instances. The Ganges water dispute with India started about four decades ago, but unfortunately no equitable sharing agreement had been possible. In 1974 there had been a memorandum of understanding for 'experimental operation' of the Farakka Barrage by India for 'forty days' only. But that experimental forty days went on and on, India cared little for the lower riparian Bangladesh. During Presidennt Zia's time there had been two-year treaty first in 1977 for sharing water of the Ganges and renewed once only, but during President Ershad there had been no treaty at all. Instead the Indian Government suggested the then President Ershad to forget about making any water sharing treaty and advised him to dredge Bangladeshi part of lower riparian area of the rivers for storing bigger volumes of water. Such dredging action program is not only very costly but also a recurring and very expensive matter having no durable solution to the problem due to siltation of river beds for obstruction of flows in the upper riparian region. The 1996 agreement made by the then government for 30 years duration sealed the ill fate of Bangladesh, at least, until the expiry of the period of the unequal an inequitable treaty until 2026.
1996 humiliation
I recall very clearly from a TV news item on the day in December 1996 how the 30-year treaty was undertaken by the then Sheikh Hasina during her visit to Kolakata and Delhi. The day previous to the treaty was signed in Delhi, Hasina not only met the West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, but in her meet she fell on his feet to pay respect in somewhat Hindu style, Shashtyange Pronipat, and so pleased the Chief Minister blessed her as usual putting palm on her forehead and then made a brief remark that said that India would make a treaty for water sharing at the Farakka Barrage point for two to three years. Amazingly, the next day the treaty was signed for duration of 30 years and not for two or three years as Jyoti Bosu had predicted in blessing Hasina.
India pitied Bangladesh
If one would recall further back about the facts about 1974 MOU, 1977 water treaty for two years and renewed for another two years, no treaty whatsoever during the nine years term of Ershad and also none during the first term of Khaleda during 1991 to 1996 with the amazingly 30 year treaty made in December 1996 with P.M. Hasina that Bosu had predicted for a very short period. This treaty had no right standing so far as it did not meet international rules and conventions. Further that the treaty had no guarantee clause at all. These meant that the treaty went against the interest of lower riparian Bangladesh and violated international standard rules, conventions and norms. Thus it became a fait accompli that continues to harm Bangladesh, its ecology, economy and thus subservience to Delhi made in reality a mockery of sovereignty of Bangladesh. During the last 13 years it is the sad reality that India released for Bangladesh less quantities of water than Delhi had promised in the terms and schedule of the treaty; their excuse keeps on telling that they had no flow enough in the upper region and hence the lower quantum for Bangladesh became obvious.
Aggravate further
Having had the sad and painful experience due to India's Farakka Barrage being operated for the last 35 years, the Tipaimiukh dam has been floated to further aggravate the position of Bangladesh in this case in the eastern region involving one fourth of the much smaller and impoverished geographical area.
Redress at the UN
Being the Tipaimukh a life and death question for Banglkadesh, Bangladesh has to stand solidly united to restrain India to abandon the Tipaimukh dam project for good. But if she does not restrain on their own, Bangladesh has no option left to bring the matter in the knowledge of international bodies like the UN and the possibly into the International Court of Justice at the Hague for appropriate redress.
