[ALOCHONA] Our doctors - blocked arteries, blocked mind

One of my friend's brother after returning from Malaysia fell ill. All of a sudden he started vomiting, sweating, then lost conscious, started salivating. Wife and sisters rushed him to the nearest red brick government hospital but he was refused entry their by saying this case can't be dealt in our hospital.
Helpless relatives rushed him to another big private hospital –where people drive himself in only to be out in his coffin, sorry, all our bed is full we are not in a position to accept him.

Dead at night, at around 2 am - only good thing is traffic is thin so that the patient shuttled from one to another hospitals to find a doctor who is ready to accept and treat a serious patience.

After refused from the 2nd hospital, desperate relatives took him to another private hospital, where they happily admitted him and immediately took him for CT scan and MRI and diagnosed as 'nothing found' but was kind to keep him for further observation. After couple of days he was willing to go home but suddenly started vomiting again and after few tests it is said that he had a mild stroke. Following day he started talking abnormally and still stays there (13.12.2009).

I am not going to overwhelm you with the number of doctors per 100 or 1000 of our people for 160 million population of ours. There are plenty of fancy and smart looking tall buildings supposedly equipped with doctors and technicians in our affluent city of Dhaka. Who ought to serve patients at least who goes there with a big pocket. That is the modern business rule- serve your clients to his/her satisfaction.

I do not want to refer to the human, ethical or professional values that should drive the doctor or a technician to attend his/her patient but suffice to say that like our general perception on our educated mass this profession gone down to the drain over the time. It is not that we do not have enough qualified doctors or nurses but certainly they have lost their ethics to treat a patient with reasonable care.

Despite the magnificent infrastructure and mechanical set up with billions of taka investment, hundreds of thousands who can afford rely only on foreign doctors mostly because they appear as more caring and reliable.

To please some one I am not going to state here that there are good and caring doctors, they had set example but in general the perception is even money can't buy a doctor's good care. They start with a CT scan, MRI (which cost thousands of taka) instead of a simple blood test. No modern business practices or old ethical values are exercised.

Any single life is precious to his/her family, once gone, gone forever. I have no clue since when our professionals started behaving like this and how and when they will respect their professional ethics, save the humane side.

City fathers or the supervisors is of no help.
