Pretending to be revolutionary : ULFA's way

Nava Thakuria

During the last few years, the ULFA has lost publicsupports to a great extent.  Once the outfit received media headlines . But today the media of Assam gets the nerve and logic

to condemn those barbarous acts out rightly.

SAN-Feature Service : They are organized, armed, powerful, influential but not logical and responsible. That is the way one might describe the character of the

banned outfit of Assam, the United Liberation Front of Asom.

They are organized (at least for two decades in their 30 years old existence).

The ULFA is really enriched with arms & ammunitions and they are still

possessing the power to strike (of course it becomes their only

choice)  in Assam.

Finally they are influential, because there are still some people in

the State who prefer to repose faith on the outfit as a revolutionary

group. But there are many high profile individuals in Guwahati, who

want to keep ULFA menace continue, as it offers them a handsome

dividend always.

But, the ULFA leaders (leaving aside few hard core cadres) remained

illogical and irresponsible since the beginning. This is the outfit,

which can kill an innocent NGO activist (Sanjay Ghosh) and tell his

wife that her husband was still alive. When the lady asked for his

body (dead or alive), the leader of ULFA turned down her appeal.

Till date, the family of Ghosh has not seen his dead body. The ULFA simply

ignored the great saying in Hindu mythology that God lives in dead

bodies.

The same group can kill a teacher-journalist (Kamala Saikia), who

wrote a series of articles in the newspapers criticizing the misdeeds

of ULFA. A few rebels of the outfit came to the residence of Saikia at

night and invited him for some discussions with their 'Sirs'. Saikia

was not feeling well but even then he accompanied them, as he was

brave enough and of course believed in his wisdom. But those notorious

ULFA boys killed him, as they could not defeat Saikia in debates. His

body was found next morning and shockingly his entire body carried the

signs of torture with the burning cigarettes.

The same outfit, who wants to make Assam independent under its

leadership, killed a young girl (Roshmi Borah) citing the reason that

she was a spy to Indian army. In reality, the girl used to teach music

to the kids of an Army officer. One ULFA boy wanted her to marry, but

when she refused, he termed Roshmi as anti-revolutionary. So she was

killed, but (hold your breath!) she was gang raped before being

killed.

They have been opposing the celebration of India's Independence and

Republic Days (of India) in Assam and also once threatened to take

harsh actions against those who dared to hoist National flag during

the Days. To enforce their diktats, the outfit made a blast at Dhemaji

during the I-Day celebration (2004) killing 13 innocent indigenous

women and children.

After years of keeping mum on the issue, the great

Commander-in-Chief of the ULFA had recently made a public apology to

the people of Assam for this notorious act in Dhemaji.

Is it that the leaders of ULFA have realized about their disastrous

activities and hence have decided to get reformed? It can be easily

guessed that reason behind it might be the serious crisis the ULFA is

facing today. During the last few years, the ULFA has lost public

supports to a great extent. The media starts ignoring the 'unnecessary

long and useless' statements issued by the outfit time to time. Once

the outfit received media headlines for all destructive activities as

their smart sympathizers in Guwahati played the trumpets justifying

those  crimes. But today the media of Assam gets the nerve and logic

to condemn those barbarous acts out rightly.

And more to it, Bangladesh (after Bhutan did in 2003) has shown the

guts to take actions against the hiding ULFA leaders in their

territories. In the recent months, the Bangladesh government led by Sheikh Hasina  has shown the courage and conviction to free the country's soul from all sorts of terrorist  activities.  First it was ULFA's foreign secretary Shasha

Choudhury and its finance secretary Chitraban Hazarika, who were

forced to get trapped in  Dhaka. Till then,

they were living in Dhaka with their fake identities (precisely

Bangladeshi Muslim) and of course maintained a healthy and happy

family life.

Finally a big catch for India was signaled from the same city. One of

the founders of ULFA, Arabinda Rajkhowa was on way to India. He came

with another important ULFA leader Raju Baruah and with their families

(and also bag and baggage). The chairman of ULFA, Rajkhowa slipped

into the Border Security Force custody through the

Bangladesh-Meghalaya border (and finally they all were handed over to

Assam police).

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram made

a statement in the Parliament that the top ULFA leaders had

surrendered to the Indian agencies. But when Rajkhowa was asked by the

local reporters in Guwahati, whether he had surrendered, the fierce

leader got annoyed and strongly denied that. He would never do so,

Rajkhowa shouted.

But is it not a case of surrender? You are a top leader of a banned

group believing in arms struggle and you are under the security cordon

(of your own) by many armed cadres. After a series of developments,

you are under the government custody. The entire episode had not

witnessed a single firing from your end. Amazingly, you were with your

wife and babies at the international border and today you all are in

safe custody.

It might not be a formal surrender ceremony where Rajkhowa and his

colleagues had paraded. But militarily and morally, all the top ULFA

leaders had surrendered to the Indian government agency. Question

arises, do they have the moral courage to confess the truth behind

there mysterious surrender to the people of Assam and try to make an

ultimate attempt to be logical, honest and responsible. –SAN-Feature Service
