The Workers Party of Bangladesh (Reconstituted), led by Haider Akbar Khan Rano, and the Communist Party of Bangladesh, are set to be merged on February 26 in spite of their different orientation.
The central committees of the two parties will hold a joint meeting at CPB's main office to finalise the unification process, party insiders told New Age on Monday.
Before that meeting, the Workers Party's faction will also hold another joint meeting, said inside sources.
Despite hard-liner Rano's decision, the leaders of the Workers Party (Reconstituted) are still divided over the issue of joining the CPB as half of the central committee members prefer to retain their party's own identity.
Rano admitted that he wanted unification of two parties but said that two of the central organisers of his party — Abdus Sattar and Azizur Rahman — were not agreeing with him.
The general secretary of CPB, Mujahidul Islam Selim, said that the unification of two political parties, which belong to two leftist camps, is going to be finalised.
`A party of Chinese orientation and a party of Soviet orientation are being merged for the first time. We shall hold a joint press conference on February 26 after the meeting of two parties' central committees, and announce the merger,' said Selim.
A section of leaders of the Workers Party led by Rano left the party in December 2008, after WP president Rashed Khan Menon decided to contest parliamentary polls as a 14-party candidate with the boat symbol, and formed the Workers Party of Bangladesh (Reconstituted).
