[ALOCHONA] 474 registered NGOs spent Tk 10,366.76 crore in 6 years

Govt has no record of their project-wise expenditures: Matia

The government keeps no record as to how the registered NGOs spend their funds on each project, the agriculture minister, Matia Chowdhury, told parliament on Monday.
Replying to a question from Md. Israfil Alam, MP, of Naogaon-3 constituency, she said that the government was not in a position to provide information on how the NGOs spend their project funds as the NGO Affairs Bureau does not maintain the data-base of their accounts.
'No such database was created by the NGO bureau,' she said in her written reply.

The NGO Affairs Bureau, she said, keeps a year-wise account of expenditures by the NGOS.
Quoting the Bureau's statistics she said the registered NGOs spent a total amount of Tk 10,366.76 crore in six fiscal years beginning 2001-02.
Matia Chowdhury, who is also in charge of the prime minister's office in parliament, said that in all 474 NGOs were registered with the NGO Affairs Bureau during the previous BNP-led government.

She said the NGO bureau has sought an allocation of Tk 1 crore for the coming fiscal to get the activities of the NGOs reviewed by independent audit firms.
The government, she said, would be in a position to review the NGO activities once it got the allocation asked for.
The sitting of parliament resumed in the afternoon with panel chairman Fazle Rabbi Miah, in the chair.
