[ALOCHONA] Re: A letter to Dr. M Zafar Iqbal - Jute Genome

Dear Alochok Q Rahman

My apologies to you. Whilst it is often my intention to be quarrelsome and obnoxious, it most certainly was not my intention here with you. This is because it is abundantly clear that you do hold politcians accountable and you are not a blind Nethrist. I find myself agreeing with the direction of your arguments. To be clear, I have already agreed with you that government support of the work on the jute genome is positive. I can also see why you would laud this support. I should laud it too but I can't because politcial activists are already using this subject as justification for unrelated this and political that. Certainly you did not say anything at all similar and my aplogies to you again for not making this clear

See, brother, if our Government stood up for Talpotee then I too would be proud. But this is Bangladesh. Normal logic does not apply. Unfortunate. But true.

Stating that Talpotee belongs to us is mere sabre rattling - or in our case it is mere toothpick rattling at best. I suggest that India may give up Talpotee at an expedient time to help AL show that it can stand up to India. It seems odd, but perhaps typical, that our Dipu Moni, a while back, made such a bold statement on Talpotee - after it was declared submerged. Now that the island has reemerged perhaps she won't be as vocal. And what joy is there in gaining an island out in the sea when we have so many problems with India on land?

My friend, if you really want to know the measure of how much a Bangladeshi government - AL or BNP - stands up for its own sovereignty vis a vis India you should look at how it deals with border smuggling. But thats a different story and nobody wants to talk about smuggling. Even though it is weaning us off domestic staples, depriving our people of income, inciting corruption in the Army, the BDR, AL and BNP. Who cares? Nobody.

Instead, those who benefit from all the dastardly things in Bangladesh want us to be busy with other cute things. The Government has to yet to put itself on the record and declare, unequivocally, that neither Pakistan or India was involved in the BDR massacre. You know why? Because no government, or politican, post 1971, has the moral character or the strength of conviction that is required to talk a lttle boldly beyond our borders.

I would simplify matters by saying that our PM condones murder, violence and extortion by her party members and activists and so I give her no credit for islands, genomes or constitutions.

My best wishes to you.

Ezajur Rahman
