A leader of the ruling Awami League and probable councilor candidate for Dhaka City Ward No 56 was shot dead last evening in Segun Bagicha area in the city, police and locals said. Police sources said, the victim identified as Ibrahim Ahmed, 40, an Awami League leader and resident of Topkhana Road area, was shot dead at around 8:00pm at Segunbagicha.
Some youths took his bullet-hit body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctors declared him dead. The youths reportedly left the hospital hurriedly after dropping the body.Doctors said bullets pierced Ibrahim's chin and head.Officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station Rezaul Karim told reporters that he sent his team to the spot.
Ibrahim, son of Saleh Ahmed, a resident of 26 Topkhana Road, was likely to vie for the next city corporation elections, sources said.He published posters and banners seeking support from the local people for the councilor election, an inhabitant of Topkhana Road said.
