WPC chief to appear before court by Oct 4
Bangladesh Fetna Prevention Committee (BFPC) has lodged a complaint with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrates' Court accusing World Peace Council president Deb Narayan Maheswar of hurting religious sentiments and defaming the Muslim community across the world.
BFPC president Mufti Mohammad Masum lodged the complaint with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Magistrate Mehedi Hasan Talukdar heard the complaint. However, he only took the charges of hurting religious sentiments into cognisance and ordered the accused to come to court before Oct 4. Pramanik Abdur Rab argued for the petitioner in the hearing.
The complaint stated that the WPC president filed a writ petition with the High Court on Aug 1 claiming Hazarat Ibrahim wanted to sacrifice the life of Ishaque, not of Ismail. The writ also demanded the text, regarding this issue, in the textbooks of the Madrasa Education Board be revised.
Masum alleged that Maheswar had intentionally come up with an incorrect interpretation of the Holy Koran, Tourat and Injil Sharif, and had filed the petition to create communal hatred among the communities. The statement also claimed that the WPC president had even distributed publications and spoken at different seminars and symposiums supporting his interpretation and thus has defamed the Muslim community across the world.
The statement also added that the petitioner had felt a responsibility to lodge the complaint with the court as Maheswar's claim had elevated a possibility for communal riots.
