BSF kills 136 in over 2 yrs

Indian border guards have killed 136 Bangladeshis since January 1, 2009, the home minister tells parliament. "Some 170 people also suffered bullet wounds [in BSF firing during the period], Shahara Khatun said on Thursday, in reply to a question from Niluphar Yasmin Chowdhury MP. She pointed out that Bangladesh at a secretary-level meeting with India in January this year had protested such killings.

Of the victims, the minister said, 67 were killed in 2009, 60 in 2010 and nine until March 14 this year. According to Human Rights Watch, an international rights group, some 1,000 Bangladeshis were killed by the Indian border guards over the last one decade. Shahara said: "The Indian side at different meetings and conferences has assured us of taking necessary measures to stop the killing of innocent people along the border."

"The Indian authorities have already started providing rubber bullets to the BSF members as per their commitment to use non-lethal weapon experimentally." The decision came from the director general-level border conference held in New Delhi on March 8-13, she told the House. Shahara also claimed that the number of killing along the border had come down due to the steps taken by the time. "The Indian government has also started holding the trial of those BSF members involved in killing innocent Bangladeshi nationals," the minister said.
